X299 Big Sur Support

Thanks. I've done a bit of search for a CPU with a higher frequency than the 10900x, but I can't find anything X299 that has lots of PCIE lanes. Am I missing something? If not, I think I've decided to go with a 10920X and ASUS Pro WS X299 SAGE II Intel X299 MB. The 10920x is actually cheaper than the 10900x for some reason and I also have other workflows that do utilise many cores better than photoshop. I

In terms of the install, I've found this: https://github.com/nadenf/ASUS-X299-Hackintosh. It seems suggest that it can be used on all Asus X299 boards. Or am I misunderstanding? If I'm not, won't I be good to go, given that my broken board is an Asus x299 Deluxe?

One other thing is that I seem to recall having to enter the number of threads on the CPU as part of the install process. The 10920x has a few more than my old 7900x. Do you know where I update this?

Sorry for all the questions. It's ages since I last did a build, and I can't remember how I did it!

Thanks in advance!

Nick

If you decide to go with X299, I personally think the Sage boards are the best choice with Sage/10G being the most popular for hackintoshing. However, it uses two plx chips to achieve the 7x pcie slots and I don’t think they support bifurcation that the hyper m.2 card uses. So you’ll most likely have to put each m.2 card in a separate pcie slot. (Not 100% on this). I've had the Sage, Sage/10G, and Sage II (don't ask my why  I had a problem with buying mobos) and I generally liked the Sage II the best since it was the newest and had more USB ports than the Sage/10G. It also has 3 U.2 ports that you can convert to M.2 if you wanted to.

That GitHub is actually mine but someone made a fork or cloned it. Here is mine https://github.com/shinoki77/ASUS-X299-Hackintosh and yes it works with all Asus boards granted you update to one of the most recent revisions with Resizable BAR support.

And no you don’t have to edit how many cores you have anymore with CpuTSCSync

There a lot in your reply - Thanks! You're right about the lack of support for the hyper m.2 card. That might be a deal breaker as I have a total of 6 nvme drives so would end up filling all of the slots up with either the GPU or the 4 drivers that won't go in the on-board slots. Also, using the hyper m.2 card is also the main need for all the PCIE lanes... Can you convert the 2 U.2 ports in addition to the M.2 ports? I thought it was an either/or thing...

An alternative choice might be one of these: ASUS ROG Strix X299-E Gaming II X299 Intel X-Series. It's compatible with the hyper m.2 card, but has fewer slots. It seems that I'll need to compromise here, so to me that's looking like the best option. Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks again!

Nick

For an answer to any such question, look into the board's manual for details about shared lanes—and also for details of bifurcation options.
If possible, find a block diagram.

Yes you can convert the U.2 to M.2 with some janky adapters. For the Sage II, if you get a 10900x+ you'll have 48 PCIe lanes to work with and enable all the 3 U.2 and 2 M.2 ports. the 3 U.2 use PCIe lanes while the two onboard M.2 are tied to the PCH. The Strix and Prime are usually very similar aside from the Prime II having onboard Thunderbolt and 5G ethernet. However, I don't believe 5G ethernet can be enabled for macOS

EDIT: Here is the block diagram for the Sage II (I'm like 90% positive it doesnt support bifurcation)

Thanks for all the input. I've decided to go with the ASUS ROG Strix X299-E Gaming II X299 and 10720x. They arrived this morning. I'm away until Sunday, so will put it all (back) together then. I'm hoping it'll work out of the box as it's so similar to the MB / CPU combination that I broke. If not, I may post again as I'm very rusty on this...

Thanks again!

Nick

I'm all up and running. It all mostly worked out of the box. I have 3 issues that I'm aware of so far:

1. I have is an intermittent delay at the end of the boot and sometimes only one monitor working. I had this problem before I broke the old MB and CPU, and it doesn't seem to have gone away. I previously posted about here, but didn't get a reply.

2. Logging in to the app store. I end up in a continuous loop each time I try to update / install something, I'm asked for my password. I enter it and get 2-factor authentication sent to my phone and I enter the number. However, the app doesn't install / update. I try again and the same thing happens.

I think this one is down to the Ethernet BSD being named en5 and will try the instructions here.

3. No on-board sound. I'm using the work-around of a USB audio stick and Bluetooth at the moment.

Do you have any thoughts on these?

Thanks,

Nick

I don't really help with troubleshooting anymore since I don't have any X299 hardware but..
1. Not sure on this but may have to do with Whatevergreen or the monitors themselves
2. Yes you need ethernet to be en0. Resetting network settings and deleting the .plist should fix it
3. double check the alcid in the config.plist. I'm not sure if I had one set in the BASE-EFI under boot-args but you can try alcid=1 or alcid=7

Also make sure to map your own USB ports! I think you can only map on Big Sur 11.2.3 and lower or Windows

Thanks for the input.

I've sorted to App Store issue.

The problem with the sound may be a wider issue as it's not working in Windows either. Maybe a fault with the board?? I'm installing windows drivers at the moment to see if that fixes things.

The monitor one is strange. When I first first the machine a few years ago, it was fine. I upgraded to the 6900XT about 6months ago, and the problem started around 4 months after that. I might try a fresh install to see if that fixes it.

The audio one was a silly one. It was disabled in the BIOS when it arrived. No idea why that might be. Just the monitor issue that i've posted about separately left to resolve. I've been living with it for ages now and not sure what to do.

@Ghostmac1969

Ever get that Highpoint ssd7101 card working? Did it make a different what SMBIOS settings you have for it to work?

Thanks
