Discussing older Mac OS X Design Language

The calculator icon in Big Sur and newer macOS versions gets my vote as one of the worst.
Right up there with the notifications bell in System Prefs. Safari has also degraded so much it looks nothing like the original version did. Looks more like a wristwatch than a compass.

Apple established a lazy model long time ago and still promotes: Just put something over a boring gradient background.

Now over a half of apps follow the suit as well.

Let’s not also forget that older versions of macOS like El Capitan snow leopard etc had a much smaller memory footprint than Monterey. They also worked well with much slower processors. As macOS has aged, apple has cut off older processors, and it’s to the point where Skylake and earlier completely get the boot in Ventura (the framebuffer doesn’t support Skylake’s uhd530 out of the box, and Ventura is requiring processors with AVX2, unless you use code/libraries from rosetta2 which doesn’t support avx2).

What are we getting in return for these more demanding hardware requirements? Bug city. Monterey has been plagued with bugs. So not only has the visual aesthetic taken a turn for the worse, the OS is now more resource intensive, bugged out, and I don’t know what the benefits are ? Dark mode? Side car? Universal control ? macOS still doesn’t have a built snap-to-grid feature for windows… instead you have to install third party tools like rectangle or mosaic or magnet to do the job.

And finally, stage manager is trash, it’s best feature is the ability to turn it off. What is apple doing to the OS? It is in decline in my opinion.

This has come up before that windows in macOS don't snap together, I'm not sure I agree. I noticed this in Monterey specifically, when using the trackpad on my M1 Air, you can snap windows together, it's feels strangely tactile. Also holding a window and pushing it to the top of the screen to change desktop on a trackpad, there's a 'bump'.

On another note, I thought the old 'Mail' icon was much better. And what happened to the puff of smoke when you removed an App from the dock!?, Cook killed the fun!.

Perhaps it is the race to put out a new version of macOS every year that is causing bugs to follow on the heels of hastily implemented features and the pressure of meeting deadlines? This really isn't necessary but Apple seems to have become stuck in the rut...

Can be the race to issue updates every year, can be the impact of the pandemic/work from home, i don't know. I do know that I miss the days of El Capitan and before.

As the macOS GUI gets more like iOS and iPad OS it seems that Apple thinks "i" devices are the main way people get work done and communicate. It is true that they sell many more iPhones and iPads but not everyone spends all day on their iPhone. Only to occasionally start up their Mac desktop. I'd say that most people here use their Mac or Hack the majority of the time. It would be nice if it were easy to change the look of macOS easily to make it look like more than iPad OS transplanted onto a desktop Mac. Apple has no intentions of doing that AFAIK.

For anyone not familiar with the term...

The calculator icon looks like a child’s toy!, imagine a calculator with big round buttons like that!. Pie anyone?.
