installed fine, booted fine, but now getting artifacts on the screen, followed by either black screen and or "no signal" from the that point on.

I've tried using both my freshly installed Catalina, old Catalina, install USB, and getting the same results each time. I'm assuming this may be a bios setting, but no idea if it's that or clover, etc or really how to begin figuring out what has broken.

any ideas where to start ?

I would probably start by trying to boot windows or even maybe linux to see if the issue happens on your macOS install only. Eliminate the possibility of a hardware issue.

1. Check you have the following Bios options selected.
  • Virtualisation : Enabled
  • VT-d : Disabled
  • XHCI Hand-Off : Enabled
  • Legacy USB Support: Auto/Enabled
  • IO SerialPort : Disabled
  • Network Stack : Disabled
  • XMP Profile : Auto / Profile 1/Enabled
  • UEFI Booting set to Enabled and set Priority over Legacy
  • Secure Boot : Disabled
  • Fast Boot : Disabled
  • OS Type: Other OS
  • Wake on LAN : Disabled
Dedicated Graphics + Integrated graphics card:
  • Integrated Graphics : Enabled
  • Graphics: PEG/PCIe Slot 1
  • Initial Display Output : PCIe 1 Slot
  • DVMT Pre-Allocated : 128M or higher
Your system may not have all of these bios options, that is fine, but make sure you set any that are present.

2. Post a copy of Your Clover EFI, so we can see what you are using and just as importantly what you are not using.
  • Remember to redact/delete your Serial Number from your config.plist before you post a copy here.
3. Provide a fuller list of your system components, i.e. CPU is i5, but which one.
  • You state your motherboard is a P85M made by Gigabyte but they have no model of this name.
  • Are you sure it is not a B83M motherboard?
  • If it is confirm which board you are using as there are a few with similar names in the B85M series.
