Hi

Got a new Gigabyte M32U (4k/144hz/IPS) monitor today and was all excited about it after initial usage and testing and firmware updating and overall enjoyment in Windows 11..

...but then I get to macOS

And I'm stuck at no more than 98hz, and I can't figure out the why/how other than it seems like maybe DSC is broken?

HDR is off and I have a correct DP 1.4 cable (have tried a couple just in case) and -- full 10bit/144/4k is working great in Windows 11

Does anyone have any tips or thoughts here?

Are folks getting above 98hz in macOS with their AMD GPUs somehow?

Thank you!

Hi TurbineSeaplane,

I'm guessing you haven't come across this thread? > https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...ems-for-5700-6800-6900-graphics-cards.319421/

The 12.3 update has caused numerous problems for AMD GPU owners like yourself (causing a degradation in performance), and yes a fix is already available (which I think should solve your display issue).

That's rather concerning. In that case, perhaps this is a new undiscovered issue? Maybe you need to post a new bug report to Acidanthera for them to look into > https://github.com/acidanthera/bugtracker/issues

From what I can find online, it appears to be a software issue on the macOS side.

This monitor apparently used to work just fine before Monterey, all the way up to 144hz for some folks.

Such a bummer that Apple appears to be just breaking things willy nilly and not really caring as it doesn't impact their own devices. :(

Well - the frustration grows.

With a Monoprice USB-C to DisplayPort adapter (https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=35503), using my wife's MBA M1, this monitor gets full 4k/144hz in macOS.

Same DisplayPort cable I'm using to go right into my RX 6800, just plugged into her MBA M1 with a DP to USB-C adapter.

That same adapter plugged into the USB-C port on my RX 6800 just gives a black screen, with an occasional flash of the desktop -- but something not right there.

So -- I'm not really sure.
This seems like a software/hardware identification issue with macOS maybe.

I think this comment might be related to what's going on here perhaps:

Since Apple hasn't solved the bug with DSC for non-Apple monitors on Intel computers I'm not expecting to get 144Hz on SDR, just 120Hz.

Yeah I'm guessing it must be something with color depth. Because the value 98Hz is exactly the highest fps you can get on HDR without DSC according to the tables on Wikipedia. (on the HBR3 connection which I obviously have given the fact that 98Hz works without DSC)

Maybe there is a way to have the monitor not report itself as being HDR capable to force macOS to choose SDR?
Or maybe there is some lower level setting that can be used to disable HDR?

Also, given that it's stuck on using HDR, how do I actually turn it on?

Because HDR isn't on according to the monitor's OSD (which I'm trusting), despite macOS limiting itself to HDR data rates.also, did you want to say 10 bit color instead of 19? ;)
