pastrychef's Asus ROG Strix Z370-G Gaming (WI-FI AC) build w/ i9-9900K + AMD 6600 XT

Hi, Pastry! Here I am now, 12.2.1 directly from BS 11.6.4.
Smooth and perfect update, wonderful!

------
As a side note with OC versions previous to 0.7.8 the rig would many times (almost everytime as a fact) go during reboot (intentional or Octane induced crash) into BIOS "error" mode, having to press F1.
And many times the startup sequence would get stuck at the apple logo not even starting the progress bar.

After updating to OC 0.7.8 all is good and all goes through a normal boot sequence.

-------
I have one question regarding the OC menu: Is it normal to see the EFI icon, is there a way to hide it, or does it need to be there?

Thanks again for this wonderful rig, Patrychef.

Yes. I finally fixed the F1 BIOS thing.

Yes. to get rid of EFI on the OpenCore Boot Picker, disable config.plist > UEFI > Drivers > Fat.efi.

It's been a while since I worked my system hard, but I'm pushing my system today and I'm still impressed at how solid the system is.

The weather hit a balmy 74F here today and I didn't have the a/c on... My overclocked i9-9900K ran full bore since the morning and it's still running with about another 12 hours to go, the temps of the CPU never exceeded 82C and the system remained fully responsive for me to surf and watch videos. Even the fans were not obnoxiously loud. The system is pulling a pretty steady 260W.

Clover EFI updated to r5145. All kexts updated to latest release versions.

OpenCore EFI updated to 0.7.9. All kexts updated to latest release versions.

As always, test new EFIs from a USB flash drive before deleting your existing/working EFI.

Did anyone put in their order for the Studio yet? :shifty:. $3999 for the good one... (else I don't see why people wouldn't just similarly equip the 14" MBP...)

I'd say that most people here would have plenty of power/speed with the M1 Max version if what Apple said in the keynote was true.
(else I don't see why people wouldn't just similarly equip the 14" MBP...)
When you put an M1 Max in the 14" MBP it greatly limits the performance due to thermals.
That probably won't be an issue in the Mac Studio.

I'm just waiting to see how difficult it is to open up the Mac Studio to clean out dust. But, I'm really close to getting one...

As much as I wan the M1 Ultra, I think it's overkill for me... I'd be perfectly happy with an M1 Max model. I'd still choose it over a laptop because I know very well that batteries degrade and die over time. I'd prefer not to have to unglue a battery from a MacBook. Also, with the larger heatsink and fans, in the Studio, there would never be any concerns of throttling.

Do you have a URL showing how the M1 Max in the 14" greatly limits performance due to thermals? A quick google showed a few people worried about the possibilities (pre-shipment), but I don't see anything about post-shipment thermals and limitations. Share a link?

Hi, @pastrychef,
These days I am using VideoProc, and I saw that in the options the 'graphics' is N/A.
For any video to convert, the software never uses the GPU.
I have been using the AMD Vega Power Injection for a long time.
VideoProc is fine for showing whether hardware acceleration can work in supported software. It just doesn't use the GPU for its own tasks.
Is it possible to fix this?
In the BIOS settings, no IGPU, only PCIE (MSI Radeon RX Vega 56 Air Boost).
