Apple Announces M1 Ultra CPU, Mac Studio and Studio Display

First time I've ever seen an RGB monitor. You can now get RGB lights on everything in your build except the CPU. Maybe AMD will be the first to do that. Intel never will. I don't think Apple will ever sell anything with RGB either. It's a fad that just won't go away.

Actually u can get RGB AIO for CPU :D If you don't like RGB - don't use it, turn off, if u can't handle the fact that there is RGB leds behind monitor - don't buy it, simple :D. For my desk setup white leds on back are amazing for night light.

I have no problems with RGB, they are just pretty colored lights. I don't buy anything that has RGB mostly because it's a waste of money imo. The prices they charge for it are excessive and it adds nothing to performance of the PC. That's why I consider it wasteful. If people want it that's fine, I don't.

In my case, this monitor doesn't look pricy because of RGB. I my self don't like rainbow RGB :D, but steady white, or steady orange for movies really looks better for my eyes. In compare, same functionality 4K monitor 2019 model with 4K@60hz (5ms) price was - 499$, with Type-C - 599$, so for -200$ you get 120hz is insane upgrade, and I am sure this year they gonna offer 4K@120hz with Type-C, maybe we can even expect 5K.

PS. 120hz is on macos, on windows you get 144HZ, and possible to offical overclocking to 160hz. I love this monitor and really recommend someone to at least look at this as an option, before go straight with Studio option.

If there would be an option without RGB for cheaper price and same performance and better design - I would choose second for sure as well. But for now LG offers 144hz monitor only this model, but this year will bring something new, I hope so.

My LG 24GM79G gaming monitor bought a couple of years ago has 1 msec latency and 144 Hz refresh. I notice a big difference in smoothness on benchmarks like Heaven and Valley between 60 Hz and 144 Hz. But you say MacOS does not support 144 Hz refresh and I'm really looking at 120 Hz? Is there a way to check that?

Yours is not 4K resolution, I have read in forums that on 2560px u can achieve 144hz, but as far as I know for 4K and higher resolution 120hz is the top.

Once they see the price tag on the M1 Ultra model they will be off and running for sure!
The models that Apple puts out on the showroom floor are not fully working. So called dummy models. They also have the serial recorded and they can track the stolen Mac or other Apple device.

Here's what an Apple employee said about Apple store security:
The Apple Store is actually littered with well-hidden, high-resolution cameras. If you look hard enough at the ceiling, you will see some of them.

Inventory is so very tediously and meticulously tracked and counted that if something as small as a SIM card is missing, it will be found out within a day. They will find out why, where, and how within the next day after that. If it was stolen, no matter how sly you thought you were, your high-resolution picture will have a highly-skilled plainclothes security specialist’s name on it — don’t come back. If it’s big enough, they will find out who you are very quickly in partnership with local law enforcement.

Realistically though, most merchandise is noticed stolen in the moment. Think someone isn’t watching? They are, but they’re not going to chase you. The second you leave it will be documented thoroughly.

So a Mac Studio w/M1 Max, 1TB SSD and 64GB RAM would be $2600.

What's a rough guess of what a current Hackintosh with similar specs would cost…ignoring ports, bluetooth, and wifi?

I just last week built a 12900k, 128GB DDR4, 6900XT (Parkville, MD Microcenter has the good Powercolor in stock, works A++ OOB), Aero G hack for $2800. 4 NVMEs I already had.

I really wanted to wait for this Studio Mac, I've got way too much I need to do between now and the expected shipping time of late April.

But check this out- the weight of the Mac Studio with M1 Max is 5.9 pounds (2.7 kg), and with M1 Ultra is 7.9 pounds (3.6 kg). That means the M1 Ultra with whatever other apparatus for cooling inside is 2 pounds heavier!
The answer is revealed— M1 Ultra uses a copper thermal module yet M1 Max uses an aluminium heatsink.
