Intel indeed seems to be coming back... this is unlike when Apple abandoned IBM for Intel... IBM never really came back in terms of delivering leadership mainstream hardware to the ecosystem. But Intel this around time seems to be fighting hard to keep x86 as relevant as possible, if not the performance leader. Pat Gelsinger has been a ball of invigoration. But AMD is quite strong and potent. There's also these two very interesting videos I came across. One is an in-depth interview with Pat Gelsinger on Alder Lake and Intel's plans for the near future and the other is about Intel's new Ribbonfet technology, which supposedly continues Moore's Law.
Additionally, Mediatek and other ARM vendors seem to be very interested in entering the ring (https://www.techradar.com/news/mediatek-reportedly-wants-to-make-chips-for-arm-based-windows-pcs), as soon as the alleged Windows on ARM exclusitivity agreement between Microsoft and Qualcomm expires (https://www.xda-developers.com/qualcomm-exclusivity-deal-microsoft-windows-on-arm/).
So not only will Intel face competition from AMD and Apple, it will have to deal with ARM vendors as well. So there is intense pressure on it (from its ecosystem partners like Dell, Lenovo, et. al) to deliver on time. Competition is a great thing. So in a few years, it will be very interesting to see if there are laptops/PCs on the market from the likes of Dell, Lenovo, HP and others that have AMD, Intel, Qualcomm, and/or Mediatek chips inside.
So I am very interested to see where AMD and Intel take the x86 platform... Ribbonfet, 3d stacking, tiles, chiplets, and so on... I'm also interested in how Apple scales up its Apple Silicon platform, how many cpu cores and gpu cores it will add to its SoC. Some very interesting years are ahead of us!
The only processors I’ve heard of that will have golden cove only cores (no E cores) with more than 6 cores are the upcoming Sapphire Rapids Xeons. Other than that the x900 chips that are upcoming in Alder Lake and Raptor Lake are said to include Gracemont cores also.Has Intel made any hints of making a flagship 1x900k CPU in either Alder Lake or Raptor Lake form with ONLY p-cores? They've made the 12400k but it's low end....
