Z690 Chipset Motherboards and Alder Lake CPU

You’re quite right. I had no intention of building an Alder Lake system after receiving the 14” MacBook Pro.

I was also doubtful of being able to boot macOS on Alder Lake and Z690. And we didn’t know whether both P and E cores could be used. There were a lot of unknowns.

But when this movie started, it played out much better than any of us expected. And that in turn has generated a lot of interest in the community.

macOS on Intel is not dead yet. And there is no desktop Mac currently from Apple that competes in this price-to-performance category.

If we consider the price of latest 14 and 16 inch MacBook Pros, we can only imagine how expensive similarly-equipped iMac Pros and Mac Pros might be. So Alder Lake is a viable option for the here and now.

Although I personally have no need for yet another computer, there is a strong market demand that we can help with. Therefore, on to the field pro bono.

Casey doing this Pro Bono is like Tom Brady playing for the Bucs (Tampa Bay) for free this season.

The says there are two USB 2 hubs onboard, likely one in the front and one in the back, each serving four physical ports from one logical port. Enjoy! That's free USB ports for you.

The remaining ports will cost 2 (C 2x2, type 10… unless there is a new type number for that) + 1/2 (C, type 9/10) + 2 (Gen 2 A) + 5 (Gen 1) = 10 or 11 ports just for SSxx. Plus one internal device.

Few issues I am having in macOS Monterey:

1. Wake from sleep work fine first time but when system goes into sleep again then it wont wake again instead system restarts;
2. After a normal shutdown, when system starts, I am getting error says, "You shut down your computer because of a problem";
3. Boot into Recovery partition and stuck on grey screen.

@ori69 have you check these in macOS Monterey?

I've used this line before and I'll use it again...it's just so good!

How's your 14" Apple Silicon MacBook Pro? Joining the Alder Lake cast and crew, or waiting for the Raptor Lake sequel?

when you do USB mapping the hackintool shows rear USB 2.0 ports as USB 2.0 hub.
Having a hub on each of the two USB 2.0 internal headers is a welcome change. Now we can configure each header individually as Internal or External.

Yea I am on Montery and I experience 1 and 2 above but I have some work around.

1. Wake from sleep will work every time for me if I disable bios usb wake event . To wake I have to manually press power button. Also I can’t do full xmp 3600mhz so I manually set it to 3200mhz to fix sleep. If I completely remove the pcie Wi-Fi/Bluetooth broadcom then I can sleep perfectly fine with bios usb wake enabled however it will introduce problem #2

2. I was getting that messsge and checking the shutdown stall files from /Library/Diagnostics… logs it shows it had issue with write permission to Bluetooth device. So when I added the native Bluetooth and Wi-Fi device this problem went away (however it introduces problem from 1 above)

I can’t wait to get ddr5 and the asus Z690 hero. I want to try inserting the Broadcom m.2 module directly into the existing Wi-Fi m.2 so I don’t need to use the usb2.0 header to see if that fixes problem #1. Any tips on where we can buy ddr5? I have bhphotovideo to pre order the asus z690. Still trying to get my hands on an i9-12900k and ddr5
