[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

i would really like to get back my 32 seconds of boot time... i know it seems like not much but that's a lot of time in PC numbers... is there a thought on how to correct this? Has it been determined to be Samsung specific??
kernel: (apfs) spaceman_scan_free_blocks:3153: disk2 scan took 32.231385 s, trims took 32.046880 s

Hi guys. @CaseySJ

I just noticed that Netflix won't play on Safari on Big Sur 11.6.1. Presents as error S7706.
Also, I suspect a similar issue on Apple TV+ not playing videos. When playing something, a black window appears in a brief millisecs and closes back to thumbnails.
I tried playing Apple TV+ contents in Safari, it also won't play there. Presents as "This browser is not supported". It's Safari FGS.

Hope some of you can investigate what is going wrong with my system? I'm using the new EFI for OC 0.7.4 that @CaseySJ posted.

Thank you so much.

I currently running Mojave w/the exact components Casey initially spec'd on this build. I have 64GB of ram.

My question for @CaseySJ and/or the other talented people present here.. from a stability, ease of upgrade, post build performance. Would it be better to do a clean install of Catalina or Big Sur?

I have been following the thread as closely as possible.. but don’t have a clear feeling of which is better for my situation: I work as a commercial photographer/videographer and as such this machine handles 100% of my production work. (~100TB of raids are attached) So I depend on it. This build has been functioning perfectly fine for my needs – But, now in their ignominious glory Adobe has deprecated Mojave as supported OS version and I will need to upgrade to something newer. Adobe PS, LR, PR, and AE are the primary usages.

I appreciate any thoughts …. Thanks in Advance.

I would say Big Sur which is as stable as it will get. But why not Monterey? I mean, it’s already version 12.0.1 and a lot of betas went before that. Then you’re also future proof in regards to updates etc.

** Experiencing Slow Boot Times in Monterey? **

Please try this and report your results:
  • In Terminal, type:
Bash:
log show --last boot | grep "trims took"
  • Give it a few seconds to run then press CTRL-C to stop.
  • Post the output.
Here's the result from my Z490 Vision D with release version of Monterey:
Code:
kernel: (apfs) spaceman_scan_free_blocks:3153: disk3 scan took 1.913441 s, trims took 1.786507 s
kernel: (apfs) spaceman_scan_free_blocks:3153: disk2 scan took 2.299866 s, trims took 2.262432 s
Note that both operations took less than 3 seconds.
After a clean install on 970 evo plus :
kernel: (apfs) spaceman_scan_free_blocks:3153: disk5 scan took 3.302405 s, trims took 3.219967 s

** OpenCore 0.7.5 EFI for Designare Z390 **
Supports Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, and Monterey
Please do not quote this post in its entirely. Use a link instead.

** NOTE **
Mojave and Catalina Users: Please see "Post-Update Procedure" below.

Please use OpenCore Configurator 2.52.0.1 or 2.52.0.2 and ensure that it's set to
0.7.5 Development Version or 0.7.5 Release Version

Windows Users:
If you are unable to boot Windows through OpenCore, try disabling AppleVTD by following the bottom half of this post.

Monterey -- What Does Not Work:
  • Intel I-211 Ethernet port driven by SmallTreeIntel82576 is not working at this time. The other Ethernet port (I-219) is fully operational. If a second Ethernet port is needed, options include:
    • USB to Gigabit Ethernet adapter
    • USB to 2.5GbE Ethernet adapter
    • USB-C dock with built-in Ethernet port
    • Thunderbolt dock with built-in Ethernet port
    • Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adapter (requires AppleVTD to be enabled)
  • Laird BT851 Bluetooth 5.0 USB dongle not working at this time.
  • If Monterey is installed on Samsung NVMe SSDs, boot time can increase by 60-100 seconds due to "trim" incompatibilty.
    • This can be addressed by cloning the Samsung NVMe SSD to another disk, erasing the Samsung NVMe SSD with Disk Utility, and cloning macOS back. Please be careful with this process if you decide to do it.

This Update Includes:
  • OpenCore 0.7.5
  • AppleALC 1.6.6
  • BlueToolFixup 2.6.1
  • BrcmFirmwareData 2.6.1
  • BrcmPatchRAM3 2.6.1
  • Lilu 1.5.7
  • WhateverGreen 1.5.5
  • HfsPlus.efi from Monterey
  • OpenIntelWireless ZIP:
    • IntelBluetoothFirmware 2.0.1
    • IntelBluetoothInjector 2.0 1 (not used in Monterey)
Instructions:
  • Download appropriate ZIP file below and follow these instructions to configure config.plist.
  • Copy EFI folder to EFI partition of USB flash disk and boot from USB flash disk.
  • Ensure that REL-075-xxx appears on bottom right corner of OpenCanopy Picker.
  • If everything is okay, mount the EFI partition of USB flash disk and internal macOS SSD, then copy EFI folder from USB flash disk to internal macOS SSD.
Things to Test or Check:
  • Any OCS or other warnings before OpenCore picker appears?
  • Does macOS boot properly?
  • Does Bluetooth work? Can you enable and disable Bluetooth?
  • Does Bluetooth work if you (a) boot into Windows and then (b) boot into macOS without doing a cold start?
  • If you use "Resizable BAR Support" in Windows, try enabling that in BIOS and check if macOS boots properly.
Mojave and Catalina Users:
  • Set SecureBootModel to Disabled.

Which File to Download:
  • Broadcom WiFi/BT (such as Fenvi FV-T919) --> OC-075-DESIGNARE-Z390.zip
  • Intel WiFi/BT --> OC-075-DESIGNARE-Z390-INTEL-WIRELESS.zip
Reminder:
  • Radeon VII and Vega 56/64 users must disable or remove boot argument agdpmod=pikera.

Updates:
  • 01-Nov-2021: Beta test
  • 02-Nov-2021: Converted to Mini-Guide

I am a non-pro photography enthusiast(I have some 80.000 photo's in my main catalog). I have been using Adobe Photoshop & LR Classic on Mojave with success for quite some time, and I upgraded to Big Sur a month ago.

I had to buy another screen calibration tool as my previous was 32-bit only.
Make sure that any RAID software/printer drivers etc are compatible with Big Sur.

There are problems with Big Sur, Apple has tightened security in lots of places which will sometimes make upgrading of third party software hard.

For example, I suddenly get confronted with warnings about r-w rights to certain folders when launching the latest LR classic. These can be easily fixed, but still.

Make sure you have backups/clones of your Mojave disk. I used OpenCore 0.7.4 as a bootloader, BTW.

No OCS or other warnings
Big Sur boots and appears to be working properly.
Bluetooth works (magic trackpad) and I can enable/disable
Bluetooth works if I boot into windows then restart (warm) and boot into macOS.

Glad to hear it. And thanks for being the first!
