Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

Gigabyte just dropped a new F7c BIOS for the Vision D. Enables Resizable-BAR option (aka ‘smart access’ memory) to enhance GPU performance. Will be interesting to see how this feature affects performance.

Hi @CaseySJ

I have the Gigabyte Z490 Vision D and I am trying to use an Antelope Orion32 Gen 3 audio interface and it of course does not work. Tried truning on the interface before boot, then turbing on the the PC as well.

My question is:
Does Thunderbolt show up in System Report or only under PCI?
Is there a way to get Local node to work without a firmware update?

Thank you!
Unfortunately there is no known solution for Antelope drivers on a Hackintosh with Mojave or newer macOS. They work only under High Sierra.

This is a bit of a long shot, but also try enabling BlacklistAppleUpdate in Misc --> Security.

HI@CaseySJ thank you, I saw your response after I opted doing a clean install.
This was followed by(purely for experimentation purposes without expectation of success) the Migration Assistant sourcing my Catalina NVMe.

The system appears to be stable. All required production applications we have tried function without issues (so far).

Interestingly, Big Sur seems to be functioning approximately +10 to +12 degrees C when compared to Catalina. hmmmm???

Idling remains at 32 to 34 degrees C.

Speak soon,

Tony.

So, @starchyfind, I have used the Syba 10Gb card (currently $90 on Amazon) and found it works very well. Its an x4 card (and while it might work in x2 slot, it's always best to use it on an X4 or greater slot), My experience is that it gets very good throughput. You can always purchase higher end cards, like the SmallTree 10Gb cards (~$500-$600), as they provide Mac drivers for their cards.

The chipset in the Syba is an Aquantia, and there are other Aquantia cards out there. But the trick behind the Aquantia cards is purchasing the card with the right Aquantia chipset version. More detail about this can be found on the insanely site (there's a forum there that discussed this issue, and there are patches there for Big Sur, if you need them). I have never had an issue with the Syba cards I purchased on Amazon, although for Big Sur you might need a patch. Having said that, if you buy a Syba or any other Aquantia card for your hack, make sure you can return it, just in case you find an incompatibility with it.

However, with this new Z-490 build and the Vision D, I purchased the OWC Thunderbolt 10G Ethernet adapter (OWC SKU: OWCTB3ADP10GBE), and just used one of the built-in Thunderbolt ports to provide 10gb speed to this system. It's been great, and I don't have to use PCIe lanes or a slot to have 10gb speed for my system. On the Mac side, there are no drivers to install. Just plug it in and go. It's been extremely reliable and the performance is equal to my Syba cards (probably because it is based on a Mac compatible Aquantia chipset). No need to worry about the Aquantia version, drivers, etc. They do provide Windows drivers, if you dual boot. But, with the Mac and with the installed drivers in Windows, it's been bullet proof. Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, Windows, Ubuntu, all have worked just fine with this adapter.

Note that I have not changed the firmware on this built-in Thunderbolt card on my Vision D. ICM mode works just fine for my needs, so I have no need to re-program the Thunderbolt firmware on the built-in card. It probably will work with re-programmed Thunderbolt chipsets, but I just don't know as I haven't done it on this system. Yes, I do use a TB port, but there are two built-in and that means I still have one still available to use if I need to.

Of course, this all assumes you have a 10Gb switch, 10Gb cable (Cat 6E or above), and will enable jumbo frames in your network configuration. I'm guessing you already know that, but I thought I would mention it, just for the sense of completeness in my comment.

Thanks for the amazingly thorough response. It looks like the Syba card you mentioned is the best option and a fair price. I won't be upgrading to Big Sur until sometime in 2021 as I have to wait for certain professional programs I use to become fully compatible (though I will test the card on an auxiliary drive with Big Sur). That OWC Thunderbolt adapter is intriguing, but my desk real estate is at a premium, so I'd rather keep it internal.

I decided to go with the QNAP QSW-M408-4C for the switch. Decent mix of features and price, especially since this is partially just for fun. I did purchase new Cat7 cables. I will need to learn more about configuring a 10gbe network, though, to maximize throughput.

The backstory is that I'm looking to remove the 1gbe bottleneck from my Synology DS1618+. I recently learned that Synology released a combo SSD cache/10gbe PCI card (E10M20-T1) that is compatible with my DS. Eventually, I'm going to pull the two WD SN750 SSDs out of my hack, pop those into the Synology, and then upgrade to either SN850s or Sabrent Rocket PCIe 4.0 SSDs.

Thanks again for the advice.

Hi guys,

I finally had success installing Big Sur.

I kept getting the 'installer is damaged' irrespective of Github or official Software Update.

In my particular instance, I had to prepare Big Sur bootable USB on a real mac and do a clean install of it on my Vision G machine running OC 0.6.4.

As I run a dual boot machine with Windows I installed Win 10 first and disconnected the mac drives. Equally, I did the same but the opposite way around when installing Big Sur and I am now posting from this machine :)

Thank you for everyone who replied to me in order to offer assistance - I was skeptical about Big Sur but must say having used it solidly for 12 hours or so its absolutely FANTASTIC. Slicker, smoother, faster and Logic Pro 10.6.1 running beautifully.

Whoop whoop!

I installed F7c BIOS, everything works, but MacOS wont boot with new Re-Size BAR option set to Auto.
I was just about to post this... macOS won't boot with Resize BAR on... Windows boots normally.

Good morning to all :)
I need to add an additional Ethernet card (in need of 3 connector).
Any recommendation of specific card?
Any Card to avoid?
I did not see anything relevant in the topic through searcg function but it is always a matter of suitable key words ;-)
Thanks in advance for your help!

Glad to hear more making move to Big Sur!

May I just ask how one goes about hiding another 'Windows' boot icon from Opencore?

If I select the wrong one it reboots machine, the correct one takes me into Win 10 x64 just fine?

EDIT: On the same topic there is an 'untitled' drive on my desktop I'd love to lose too?

Glad it helped. In terms of configuring a 10GbE network, read up on Jumbo frames. You don't have to use jumbo frames, but your throughput will suffer greatly without them (and jumbo frames configured properly on everything - switch, computer, NAS, etc).

As for the card to pick, I've had good luck with the Syba, but there are others. Whatever you purchase, make sure you can return it if you find it doesn't work for you in your network.

Good luck!
