Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

Does anyone know why i can't see f7b and f6 on gigabyte page anymore? I was looking for updates, i'm on f7b atm with no issues
I was also looking for it yesterday and couldn't find it. Looked around the web, 'b' means not final version, so they may have temporarily removed it. Today, I see, there's F7c version in the list, release on 14th, but when I try to download it gives some HTTP error, I'd wait.

Interestingly, the latest version adds support for Resizable BAR. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/display/resizable-bar-support
This is what AMD calls Smart Access Memory, introduced in latest GPU releases, although I'm not too sure, if those are exactly the same technology from engineering perspective.

Hey Casey,

I was just looking at the official OpenCore docs, trying to find something, I noticed that we have a kernel quirk enabled - ExternalDiskIcons. I also looked for it in docs, it mentions a note about it as follows (also see attached image for full description):

"Note: This option should be avoided whenever possible. Modern firmware usually have compatible AHCI controllers."

Thought, I'd ask you, what exactly does it do, as docs doesn't say much. IMO if it's a minor thing, we could disable it by default, as it patches AppleAHCIPort.kext.

The updates to Big Sur had been bricking some 2013/14 MBPs so Apple was not giving those models the BS update to prevent this. Google it and read about it. Supposedly this was fixed but you may still need to apply a fix from Apple.

Hey TRS96, thank you for the reply!

I'm still struggling to try and fix this no matter what I do I cannot install Big Sur.

Have tried all the options presented online...

I'm on OC 0.6.4 following Casey's guide but still get the same error:

I even tried building a fresh installer and making a bootable USB installer still same problem.

Anyone else had this issue?

So, @starchyfind, I have used the Syba 10Gb card (currently $90 on Amazon) and found it works very well. Its an x4 card (and while it might work in x2 slot, it's always best to use it on an X4 or greater slot), My experience is that it gets very good throughput. You can always purchase higher end cards, like the SmallTree 10Gb cards (~$500-$600), as they provide Mac drivers for their cards.

The chipset in the Syba is an Aquantia, and there are other Aquantia cards out there. But the trick behind the Aquantia cards is purchasing the card with the right Aquantia chipset version. More detail about this can be found on the insanely site (there's a forum there that discussed this issue, and there are patches there for Big Sur, if you need them). I have never had an issue with the Syba cards I purchased on Amazon, although for Big Sur you might need a patch. Having said that, if you buy a Syba or any other Aquantia card for your hack, make sure you can return it, just in case you find an incompatibility with it.

However, with this new Z-490 build and the Vision D, I purchased the OWC Thunderbolt 10G Ethernet adapter (OWC SKU: OWCTB3ADP10GBE), and just used one of the built-in Thunderbolt ports to provide 10gb speed to this system. It's been great, and I don't have to use PCIe lanes or a slot to have 10gb speed for my system. On the Mac side, there are no drivers to install. Just plug it in and go. It's been extremely reliable and the performance is equal to my Syba cards (probably because it is based on a Mac compatible Aquantia chipset). No need to worry about the Aquantia version, drivers, etc. They do provide Windows drivers, if you dual boot. But, with the Mac and with the installed drivers in Windows, it's been bullet proof. Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, Windows, Ubuntu, all have worked just fine with this adapter.

Note that I have not changed the firmware on this built-in Thunderbolt card on my Vision D. ICM mode works just fine for my needs, so I have no need to re-program the Thunderbolt firmware on the built-in card. It probably will work with re-programmed Thunderbolt chipsets, but I just don't know as I haven't done it on this system. Yes, I do use a TB port, but there are two built-in and that means I still have one still available to use if I need to.

Of course, this all assumes you have a 10Gb switch, 10Gb cable (Cat 6E or above), and will enable jumbo frames in your network configuration. I'm guessing you already know that, but I thought I would mention it, just for the sense of completeness in my comment.

Hi everyone:
After a long time... I return to the hackintosh side.
I just bought the same components like the OP except i5 10600k and MSI 5700 XT Gaming X.
I use Windows and macOS (maybe using 2 SSD NVMe or 1 NVMe and SSD SATA).
I'm waiting for a Sabrent NVMe, and I doubt about where put the NVMe: @CaseySJ recommend to put the NVMe in the slot near the CPU. And the other NVMe for macOS, where?
Thanks!

Have you tried changing SecureBootModel in the config.plist from Disabled to Default?

Does anyone know if I can use 2x 970 EVO Plus 500GB in raid 0 on this mobo and use it for BigSur?

I want to achieve the fastest read/write speeds as possible.

*I know there are sometimes issues with Samsung NVME cards.
You can certainly use RAID0, but it's best to create the RAID filesystem through Disk Utility (software RAID). You will still get insanely good performance and best compatibility with macOS.

Please try it both ways and see which setting yields the best (or expected) results. I'll change the default accordingly.

@hughythomas,

Please check the current setting of SecureBootModel in OpenCore Configurator --> Misc --> Security. If it is currently Disabled, try Default. If it is currently Default, try Disabled.
