I'd guess the difference in the speed of the M1s comes from the whole SoC package rather than just the CPU's and it wouldn't be easy to get windows to deal with all the bits on the M1 but who knows, people may be hacking Macs into PC's

That said, I think Apple have generally delivered on their advertised promises over the years and the worst that can be said of them is they told us the price, and after agreeing they were taking the micky some of us still said yes please.

I agree. And personally, not complaining, with very few exceptions my apple stuff has performed great, and usually served well beyond reasonable expectations of service life.

I didn't like the phones and what they were offering with for the prices they were selling them at; no big deal, got an android phone. I'm not a big ipad user, but when I've dipped my toes into android tablets - total junk. Apple TV may be overpriced - but man, the android-based tv boxes are pretty terrible. (I have limited tv needs and a google chrome is fine).

Having ordered my first mac Ive been on my first iPhone 8 (ebay £205 delivered) to see how that goes. Two days in a - a few niggles and a bit disappointed by the design of icons; size, spacing, proportion, but the screen seems marvellous and the responsiveness outguns (maybe unsurprisingly) the budget android it replaces. Bit miffed that the Apple store is a more expensive place to hang out than Play and reluctant to buy duplicates for fear of switching back. I suspect Ill end up running both of them for a while.
Ive swapped the battery in my Google nexus 2013 twice but other than that it has behaved pretty well perfectly from day 1 touch wood

The old Apple TV are kind of cheap but when they added the ability to download apps and then a 4k version the price went up a lot. A lot of that had to do with the BT rechargeable remote that I think is $80 by itself. I have 4 of the more expensive ones and one 4k. They are all various ages but they all work awesome with the oldest one being 5 years old and the newest one being 3 years. The phones are rather expensive however, I had my iPhone 6 Plus 3ish years and gave it to my sister who used it till last year. Apple is still doing security updates for it but it can not run the latest OS. I have been using iPhone X for three years and I plan to use it till the wheels fall off. High end Samsung android phones are not any cheaper so I see no reasons to get something that is not compatible with my eco system. I like that my phone, computer, tv all work together to make my life more convenient it is a shame I did not wait for 4 months for the 2019 4-Runner so I had car play..

Overall I agree - the products are priced at a premium but to a large degree they are worth the extra money and mostly last a long time. Integration of the various devices has its own extra value too. Obviously that price/value estimation is an individual decision and everyone should make their own decisions.

I've tried enough of the other stuff - non-Apple TV, android tablets, phones, etc - that I know that sometimes (not always) the paper features or specs don't tell the story that many of them are just crap. I mostly haven't particularly liked any of the non-apple laptops I've used (for work mostly) but they are serviceable.

Even though I'm using an android phone, it's a bit specific to the one I'm using (oneplus) that was at a way better price / quality point than what apple was offering (or what I was willing to pay) at that specific time. I don't know if I'd make the same decision now. In the lower end phones, androids can also be really good value for money for those who don't have 'apple ecosystem' issues and I still use one for various temporary roles.

Heck, even some of apple's accessories are just objectively so much nicer and better - I got a very nice and serviceable keyboard (logitec?) recently, I think it was $25. My older apple keyboard was I think closer to $100 (no longer offered) and it is still SO much nicer; since I've had it for seven years or so, it was the better purchase by far. But sometimes cheap and serviceable is what you need.

Analogies are always wrong in some way but you don't hear such persistent whinges about the premia luxury carmakers charge, which is WAY more money (or furniture or house fixtures of various kinds). It's a personal choice, sometimes the cheapo version is the better choice, sometimes the more expensive is worth the money. Or restaurants: I'm amazed sometimes friends/acquaintances will complain about apple charging a couple-five hundred dollars more for a computer or phone that they'll use for 2-4 years (and they'll use it all the time), and then drop a couple hundred bucks on a single dinner (and not even a particularly fancy dinner).

Again, no criticism, everyone makes the choices they want to make, budgets are different, etc. I just don't find the level of criticism to always be rational about apple's offerings - and to be honest, that applies to me, too, I've sometimes cheaped out in areas that I shouldn't (the airbook I'm using I really should have bought with twice the memory and quadruple the disk space - although the issue when I bought it was availability of custom build more than price, I would have paid a lot more if I knew I'd be using it this long).

I for years used a Microsoft natural ergo keyboard, then they came out with a BT keyboard Microsoft Surface ergo. I really liked how the keyboard typed, how it looked, how much more Apple like it was. However, it did not behave well dropping key strokes, sometime had lag up to 15 secs. Then Logitech released Ergo K860 wireless keyboard, it is very nice a bit different then the Microsoft shaped ergo but close, I like how the keys feel and I like how it looks but it is a bit smaller then the Microsoft and sometimes that causes me to fat finger some keys. Neither one of the keyboards are cheap they are both over $100 :-/ so yea.

I have been using a ergo keyboard for so long I am not even sure I can use a flat keyboard any longer and I am pretty sure that I would have carpel tunnel by now if for not using one.

lthough I've put in my fair share of time in to my hacks, I have zero regrets and really appreciate all that I've learned from the experience. I'd never be as familiar with macOS had I not travelled down the hackintosh route. To me, it has been a priceless learning experience.

So basically, the real hackintosh was the friends we made along the way...

I haven't done much in the way of my hacks in a while. I've just been using them. I've updated to 10.12.6 and stopped there are I have all unsupported nVidia cards in all the machines I have now. I still have a sandy bridge hack running a plex and roon server that doesn't seem to want to die. (shouldn't have said that...)

So with this whole Apple going to arm and the M1 and what ever comes after that... are they saying that the AMD and nVidia graphics cards are all crap and of no use. No one will ever need a better graphics card?!!!

Also where do I put all the hard drives for storage? I guess you just use icloud? lol

Silly company. I'm going to have to come up with a new game plan for storage I think.

External TB3 Raid would be a start or just an External TB3 enclosure for your existing drives.

Simple Thunderbolt 3 drive case is about TEN times more expensive than USB 3 case adapter.
Thunderbolt raid are terrible expensive. The cheapest desktop hackintosh is equipped with M.2/SSD slots ready for connecting other drives.
