Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

Thanks for those resources Casey. Apparently it was a bug caused by having two identical monitors and they pushed a fix (MonitorControl).

Link to the fix in case anyone experiences the same bug.
Glad to hear it! I'll update the MonitorControl reference to point to this download ZIP:

Big Sur Public Beta 3: Build 20A5364e
Takes a while to install...just be patient.

This is an incredible thread. Thank you so much for the hard work.
This is what I would call a Legend Build.

9/6/20-just built my Vision D (V1.1) with a 10850k 64GB ram. Ordered the nh-d15 chromax b/c it gets hotter than the core of the sun!
I have a Samsung NVME 970 EVO PLUS working via install to platter drive then clonezilla to nvme. It would not finish install on nvme (new news to me obviously). Regarding heat - It gets hot during boot/file transfer, but no hotter than the southbridge (i think) heatsink (the one thats lite w 'Designare'). And Im getting 3000MB up and down.

My thunderbolt reads 'No drivers are loaded'. Does this mean I still would need to physically flash the chip on the back to get full function?

Is on board Bluetooth supposed to be working?

Update on my posts about iGPU / GFX AVG frequency showing 0.15Ghz when using igfxfw=2:

instead of adding it as a boot argument, I attached it as a property to the igpu in device properties.

inject igfxfw.jpg

I tested converting "Sony Camp 4K Demo.mp4" with and without the property injected.
Converted in Quicktime, 1080P, HEVC.

Time it took to convert:
without igfxfw injected: 3:19.37
with igfxgw injected: 2:05.32

So even though IPG is showing unexpectedly low IGPU operating frequency, injecting igfxfw clearly has a big result and improvement (at least in my test of converting 4K HEVC to 1080p HEVC)

Glad to hear it. Samsung 970 EVO Plus with latest firmware should be Mac compatible and allow you to install directly...

Your Thunderbolt is operational, along with hot-plug. Please see the "Thunderbolt" section in Tech Talk for more details on this.

It will work only with the experimental (beta) AppleIntelBluetooth driver. NOT recommended at this time and no support to be provided here because it's not yet complete.

@CaseySJ Thanks for the great guide, I have read most of it three times and I am convinced that this will be my next upgrade since I returned the new 2020 iMac today. Yes, that is correct, I returned the custom build to order iMac for three reasons, disappointing performance including the need for peripherals for all four of my back-up drives and an Nvme Thunderbolt enclosure, reduced read/write speeds on these external drives and multiple kernel panics, one that stated that "GPU cannot be found". Then I read this post (see, your fault ) and back went the iMac. My plan is to now build with the Vision D and the i7-10700k based on your guide using OC. I have a RM 750x PSU. Do you think that this 750 watts is enough for this build? I have 64gb of DDR4 2400 (o.c. to 2666 MHz). Will this be sufficient for the new build? Thanks again for the great and in-depth guide!

thank you CaseySJ.
I did have the latest firmware on the nvme - checked via Windows 10 machine. I also forgot to mention I was not using IGPU but a gt710 (didnt have a spare dp or hdmi cable/monitor) - sorry. Perhaps that was the issue.

Ok I will revisit the thunderbolt section.
Again - thank you. really really happy with this build.

Is it possible to replace the onboard wifi with a apple? Or must you use the Fenvi PCIe card?

elfcake,
I went with the 10850k b/c its 10 cores only 0.1ghz slower than the 10900k, its in stock at microcenter for $459 - FYI. Though I know its not a tone better than the i7 it wasnt the insane $699 10900k.
I went with a EVGA 850watt (supposed to have stable power) - the mobo has a additional 6 pin for dual gpu's. I connected it either way to ensure there is ample power across the board.
Ive only had mine up 1.5 days and already I am very pleased. (I do audio production hobbies... with it) - all just FYI.

I think this is a good reminder of the consumer demographic that Apple has abandoned, and hence the reason why we are drawn to Hackintosh. As good as iMacs are, they are encumbered by thermal bottlenecks, closed form factors (non-upgradeable), lack of standard IO, etc.

The RM 750x is more than sufficient for a Z490 with i7-10700K and 64GB RAM. It will even be sufficient if you add AMD Big Navi in the future (assuming drivers are provided by Apple and AMD).

Flashing the Thunderbolt controller is purely optional and justified only if a certain Thunderbolt peripheral requires the Bus. Most do not, but those that do are listed in one of the references in the Thunderbolt Tech Talk.

We should always evaluate Thunderbolt performance on our system without flashing the firmware. That will give us an idea of what works and what does not.

The on-board WiFi card is in an Intel CNVi socket, which is not a general purpose M.2 slot. Only Intel modules will function there -- it's a proprietary socket wired to the PCH (chipset).

The Fenvi (or YOUBO) card is still the recommended choice by far. The AppleIntelBluetooth project is coming along nicely, but will probably take several more months. Handoff/Continuity features are completely inoperative at this time, so that means:
  • No Sidecar
  • No AirDrop
  • No Continuity Camera
  • No Handoff between applications
  • No Unlock with Apple Watch
  • No Pay with Apple Watch
  • etc.
Not worth it.

Apple anounced change to intel 3 months after I got my G5 in 2005. I was so pissed - then when my G5 died after 7.5 yrs I built a purposed built hack out of its case- Sandy Bridge, then I was not pissed any longer.... hahaha

Great info again, thank you very much CaseySJ

I can confirm Metric Halo audio interfaces with the 3d card and public beta 9 works with the 2.5 NIC.
