Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming build with working NVRAM

Hi tastic,

Is your iGPU disabled in BIOS?

Ted

@pastrychef - I'm stumped with my Z390 Gaming X / i9-9700K / RX-580 build.

It was booting fine yesterday (19,2 SMBOIS) to 10.15.5 with dual monitors (DP and DVI), but when I tried applying the recent supplement update, that somehow fouled up and never completed, leaving me with an unbootable hard drive.

I made a new UniBeast installer and re-installed everything the same, but now when leaving Clover, it only boots maybe 1 out of every 5 tries (maybe less) and most of the time I immediately get the "prohibited" sign after the bootloader.

I've tried changing the SMBIOS around (19,1, 18,3, and 17,1 - no changes) and am back to 19,2 since that seems to be the only one where dual monitors work.

My motherboard is slightly different, and the only kexts I have are:
  1. Apple ALC
  2. IntelMausi
  3. Lilu
  4. WhateverGreen
  5. VirtualSMC
  6. USBPorts (custom after using Hackintool guide)
Besides the boot issue, my USB 2.0 ports are not active (but they work fine in BIOS).

Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like NVRAM is not working.

@tastic - Then I recommend using pastrychef's Clover EFI that he has attached to the first post of this thread. The only modification you will need to make is to substitute your USBPorts.kext because his is specific for the Gaming M mobo (and enter your SMBIOS information of course)

Also, you should unlock your MSR, which pastrychef gives a great guide in post #2 of this thread.

Like you, I had intermittent boot problems. After I adapted pastrychef's EFI to my build, my system has been rock-solid stable.

What I would do is:

1. Download pastrychef's EFI and substitute USBPorts-With-Power.kext with your custom USBPorts.kext. Replace the SMBIOS information in his config.plist with yours.
2. Save the modified EFI onto a bootable USB or replace your EFI with this.
3. Unlock your MSR
4. Reboot into the BIOS and save your profile. The unlocked MSR will be saved into this state.
5. Clear your CMOS
6. Reboot into the BIOS and load your saved profile.
7. Boot into the modified EFI.

That should do it! It really helped me out.

iGPU is disabled.

Get your NVRAM working. Read through posts #1, 2, and 4 of this thread.

Hi I am thinking about shopping around for some parts and the thinking about i5-9600K, GIGABYTE Z390 M Gaming, Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR4 2133 MT/s (PC4-17000) DR x8 Unbuffered DIMM 288-Pin Memory, Corsair cx series 550, 650 or 750 (is 550 or 650 enough for my needs? Just a mid range gaming rig) and for the network card I am having a hard time which one to choose to support bluetooth and wifi. Would buying a usb dongle for be enough or does it have to be through PCI-E?

For graphics I was thinking of Sapphire RX 580 but I am not sure if it’s good enough to play COD Warzone. I do NOT need a very compatible graphics card on Mac OS just as long as I can connect this into my TV through HDMI. So would it be advisable to buy a Nvidia graphics card if I really only need it to work on the windows side.

First, be aware that Apple has announced that they will be transitioning away from Intel CPUs to ARM based CPUs of their own design. This means that the days of macOS support for Intel systems are numbered.

If you are comfortable with this knowledge and still want to proceed, everything you've listed should be fine. Either 550W or 650W will work with the components you've listed. However, personally, I'd go for a 650W if the difference in cost isn't too far off from the 550W because while the 550W is fine for all the components you've listed, if/when you upgrade to more powerful graphics card, the 550W may be stressed.

Please see post #3 for info regarding Wi-Fi/Bluetooth cards. Keep in mind that if you want AirDrop to work, a supported Wi-Fi card is needed.

Please see post #3 about HDMI and macOS. No, I really don't recommend Nvidia cards for use with macOS.

Would it be possible to just use integrated graphics on my mac os? And have a stronger (unsupported in mac os) card in there just for windows? Or would it cause problems.

It's possible, but it's something I've never personally tried. If this is the route you will be taking, I suggest looking for a motherboard that has DisplayPort as well as HDMI.

If gaming in Windows is a priority, you might consider one of the AMD Navi cards.

Ahh I see, I wanted to follow your set up (only difference is i5 9600k, would this be fine for gaming? I just want mid range specs and enough to run warzone on medium to high settings) since I only have a little bit of experience with hackintosh (I built one in 2012 but never figured out why it kept freezing after 45 mins to an hour). Or would you suggest i5 9700k?

From your post about HDMI you mention it not working well on mac os "lowering resolution and/or refresh rates". I currently use my 2013 macbook air with thunderbolt adapter to hdmi and use it on 720p instead of 1080p since I mainly use it on my big screen tv on my bedroom. I'm not concerned with resolution and slow refresh as long as it works.

And also would this work OOB because I was planning on buying something like this for my macbook air anyways.

Since the other cards, I might have to search around and the adapter
