Hi all,

Based on the configuration of my hackintosh, can anyone recommend a video card that will do the following:

1) play nice with high sierra
2) install with no problems
3) drive 2 monitors while running high sierra

I am going to use the machine to run Logic Pro X and want to put the main sequencer page on one monitor and the software mixer on the other screen.

Any and all recommendations and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advance,

AMD RX 5xx series. AMD Vega series if you want to spend a bit more. AMD 5700/5700XT if you want to go newer than that.

AMD RX 570 will do what you want. If both of those screens are 4K, you should go Vega or better.

Are you recording and editing music as a hobby or a business ? If you are using a Core 2 Duo CPU that is over ten years old I would guess it's just a hobby. If so how much budget/money do you have for a graphics card ? What resolution are the monitors ?

Hi,

The monitors are Viewsonic vx-2703s, the cpu is Intel e8600, and the system will mainly be used for composing song ideas for later development in recording studio at a record label.

As far as cost is concerned, trying to stay below $200 for this particular project for the time being.

Thanks,

AMD RX560 (not XFX), or RX570-580

RX560 is a low power card that won't tax your power supply, and some come without the need for a 6-8 pin power connector similar to your 8400GS. I have a Gigabyte RX460 4gb and it easily powers 2 1080p monitors.

Use HDMI and a Displayport to HDMI adapter and avoid the DVI-d cable.

yeah, if you are only doing 2 1080p monitors, pretty much anything somewhat modern will push that. RX 560 or 570.

After some research, I am planning on getting the following video card from Newegg below:

ASRock Phantom Gaming Radeon RX 560 DirectX 12 RX560 4G 4GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 (Uses x8) HDCP Ready Video Card

Along with a displayport-to-hdmi cable and a hdmi cable, I think I'll be ok with this project.

Thanks to all for the suggestions and recommendations. I'll report back when I've made the purchase and installed and tested the upgraded system.

Thanks,

Looks like a good deal for $110. Most 560s have been selling for much more than that lately due to short supply. Let us know how quiet it is and if the silent mode actually works with macOS.

Update:

I got the card(rx560) but had to take off the back plate in order to install it. This was due to the design of the back of the case.

Anyway, I installed the card and booted the machine. After selecting the hackintosh to boot from, the computer displays the progress screen. It goes about 75% thru the booting process, then goes to a blank screen.

The only thing I see is 'hdmi' flash in the upper right corner of the screens(booting to 2 screens connected to the hdmi and displayport connections on the card).

Any ideas as to what is happening and what I can do to resolve this issue? I'm so close to making this hackintosh with a 2 monitor display, so any suggestions as to how to make this a reality are appreciated.

By the way, I am running OSX High Sierra.
Thanks,

Is this for an Optiolex 780?

I’m by no means an expert, but that machine most likely doesn’t have UEFI and getting newer AMD cards to work without UEFI can be a pain (or so I’ve read).

if you want something that will drive two displays and works with High Sierra, get a cheap gt 640 (Kepler variant) off eBay. Will work out of box and doesn’t require UEFI.
Heres a manufacturers part number:
