Ok,

EDIT---So here's What I wound up doing..... connected multiple fans to the same Mobo CPU fan Header....
1. figure out the 2 wire that take in voltage (12v and 5v - look up G5 fan pinouts), find the ground.- CONNECT the 2 voltage wires together. (fan will not spin unless both wires get voltage) - I tested using a 9V battery.
2. connected the 2 voltage wires to the 12v - ground to GND - and RPM wire (the forth wire from the fan) to the CPU fan header
3. set voltage control in the bois

works very well so far - total draw is 2.6A.

NOTE - if you connect more then one fan; use only one RPM wire from one fan.[/i]

so I have viewed the pinouts for the fans in the "G5 mod" posts - but am not sure thats 100% correct - or at least I am having some issues. (like the HDD fan and the PCI are PWM and are capable of speed control)

at this point I am not concerned with the connection pinouts - more so the actual wires that come out of the fan itself.

What I am hoping to get answered:
(with the fan face down and viewing the circuit board - so you can see were the wires get soldiered to the PCB) What are the wires?

I believe they are (from left to right)
Speed controll
12v
ground
Rpm

there is a 'PWM' stamp on the circuit board next to the 1st wire (which I believe is the speed control)

thanks so much for everyones help

Re: G5 original fans pinouts etc...- Help

Never used them myself as they're all far too loud even at 5V, but as far as I can remember the G5 fans are voltage controlled.

Re: G5 original fans pinouts etc...- Help

i tried one fan of my g5 at 12 v and it was so loud, i can't even hear music.
so trust me, it is better to get some nice new and silent fans.

Re: G5 original fans pinouts etc...- Help

I really would like to use the original fans but It looks as there is no way to re-use them and have them controlled - however I am able to get 2 working off the mobo - one on CPU header and the other on system header - So I will use one in the PCI bay and the other behind the CPU - and just run the rest off of the PSU with a Resister to slow them more

Hello,

I am interested in doing a PowerMac G5 mod in order to accommodate an ATX board, while still preserving it's internal and external look. After extensive research, I found out that I would be able to rewire the original G5 fans; But since the G5 utilizes a lot of fans for it's cooling, I am very worried about noise (Especially considering that I'm used to a whisper-quiet computer). Then I came across this thread. I'd like to use all of the fans, so I thought I could use +12 and Ground directly from the PSU (I figured out it would be too many amps to be supplied directly from my motherboard). But I am confused on how to wire them. I would be really thankful if somebory could please explain some things to me.

The CPU fan header has four pins; One for Power (12V, Yellow), one for Ground (Black), one for the Tachometer (RPM Monitoring - Green), and one for PWM (RPM Controlling - Blue). Are the fans' RPM cables supposed to be connected on the PWM pin (Blue)? And, how would I be able to control all of the fans off just the CPU header? Can I just connect all of the wires to it, or will I have to do complex wiring from one fan to another? I would connect each fan separately if I could, but unfortunately, my Motherboard only utilizes one 4-pin header for the CPU. Thanks in advance.

Regards,
XENGS.

For Moderators: I know this thread is old, but I couldn't find anything similar - And I thought it would be better to post a reply under here, rather than making a new thread. If a moderator thinks my post should be deleted, please let me know and I'll just create a new thread.

So do you got the pwm control working?
