Thanks for that information. I was experiencing this issue even when using Avidemux 2.7.2 and turning on a video on Youtube... I repeatedly made the system crash. I was even wondering, if my CPU might be defective. And after changing the CPU cooler, the SSD, the graphics to Sapphire RX580 during the last days, the problem still occurred. I am running High Sierra at the moment with system definitions for iMac18,3...

Yes, I did. In my case it was a microcode bug by Intel, that could be fixed with an update of my EFI/BIOS. Check here for details: https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...apphire-ati-radeon-rx580.246679/#post-1988983

OK thanks for confirming. It seems these symptoms can have a variety of entirely different causes.

I eventually diagnosed and solved my own issue as well (Vega 64 causing GPU freezes when using HW encoding, especially in Premiere Pro, Davinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro); it turned out to be related to HDMI/DP sound outputs, and was resolved by stopping AppleGFXHDA.kext from loading, and thus disabling all HDMI/DP sound. The freezes happened even though I wasn't actually using any of the HDMI or DP sound outputs (I have a USB soundcard). It was made noticeably worse if any DP monitor was plugged in - happening after literally 2-3 minutes of Premiere Pro encoding - but still happened occasionally when only HDMI monitors were connected. Disabling GPU sound resolved the problem entirely; it's been running for 5+ weeks now without a single freeze.
