[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

After changing the BIOS before installation, I get this message: "The system has experienced a boot failure possibly due to incorrect configuration. Previous settings in BIOS may not be compatible with current hardware state.

Current CPU Speed: 4302.5 MHz
Current BCLK: 100.0 MHz
Current Memory Speed: 1866.66MHz

I have the same hardware as you. Any ideas?

Yes, I would love to access the Bluetooth in System Preference but it is not there. And I could not find it in System Preference view -> customize neither.

I will try to reset my CMOS, and see what happens.

Edit 1: just wondering @CaseySJ, what is your bios version?
@CaseySJ

I tried your advice, and found out that did not work out. So I was pretty hopeless, and tried the in OS update of MacOS. Turning out the upgrade releases my BT card, and now it works like a charms. I am blessed.

I am not so sure if the OS version is the key factor, or the new installation made the change. So I just bring it up for our further discover.

And, thanks CaseySJ.

The only last thing to do now is to fix the shutdown/restart.

Hello @Mattioo,

This might be a simple problem (let’s hope). Some questions:
  • Do you have the USB install disk or a bootable backup disk?
  • If so, please try booting from USB or the backup disk. Press F12 at the BIOS Splash screen and select the disk from the boot menu.
  • Then Clover will appear. Choose the option to “Boot macOS from Mojave”.
  • Does the screen go black? Does the system crash?
  • Also, have you disabled the MSR 0xE2 register by following the Mini Guide? Disabling this register is not necessary, but if you did choose to disable it, what version of BIOS was running at the time (F6)? And what version of BIOS is running now?

So, after two days of investigation I'm not much more advanced.
For information I have the Radeon VII and my BIOS is F6. I havent done the MSR 0xE2 @CaseySJ.

During my searches I found out that OsxAptioFix2Drv-free2000 was apparently a risky memory kext to use said by his own maker, so I decided that it wont harm to upgrade everything. I'm now currently using the OsxAptioFix3Drv with the last clover 5070.
I changed the SMBIOS to iMacPro 1,1, and did the Pro Apps - Option 1.
I had problem with Quick View but this boot argument "shikigva=32 shiki-id=Mac-7BA5B2D9E42DDD94" it fixed it.

Despite I had perfect booting with this new configuration and everything was working, I still suffer from sudden black screen. No freeze before, the keyboard become not active (cant switch on the caps lock) but all the leds and fans stay on. I dont know where to look for a crash report file if there is one ?

I've been using a friend EFI folder who has almost the same build except he has a Vega 64, coming back to my previously working EFI iMac 19,1 and trying the iMac Pro 1,1 with Virtual SMC new memory kext I have the exact same behavior. I have kernel panic error sometime during boot, and when the computer boot, between 10s until 10min I will have this black screen crash.

After some test I had done I could not even boot at all because of Initial Display : PCIe 1 Slot, it was always black even with the card unwired and HDMI plugged in MoBo. I had to reset the cmos so I have a blank BIOS setup now to configure again. I wanted to connect back the discrete GPU, and I could boot again and see designare boot logo. After 20 second being in the BIOS setup I encountered the exact same issue, black screen and then my screen saying no signal.

During other tests I did, I could keep my computer on for 1h so apparently no crash and black screen if I was only connected to the MoBo HDMI and my Radeon VII unwired.

Is my Radeon VII the problem ? What happened after 1 month of using this very stable hackintosh ? The only things that changed are the apple last security update three days ago but I used my hackintosh for a full day without issue after that, and my cat dropping 1/3 of a glass water on the table during the night but I'm absolutely sure its just a coincidence as no water got anywhere else than the table. I found out the mac going nuts with the fan and screen black when I woke up in the morning. Can it be the OsxAptioFix2Drv-free2000 that finally broke something in my build as the developper say it can ? Why does it work for 10min with no issue, I can even play demanding game so the Radeon VII is still working ? Is the problem software ? Hardware ?

I'm such no expert that I'm getting out of ideas, except formatting everything and trying a clean install. But will it be really a clean install ? Is it worth to try ?

@Mattioo This erratic behavior could point to faulty memory. See this page and go to "Check Your Memory Using MemTest86".

I launched it yesterday but it was so long, after an hour and everything was written "Ok" I stopped it as I wanted to try new config files. Is it usual that it works 1 month before not working ?

I started getting some worrying behavior this morning after a couple weeks of good performance:

Sleep is disabled on my workstation. Left the computer on at the studio yesterday after a long work day with zero issues. Came back this morning and the system and UI is unresponsive to the point of being unusable.

See this video to see what i mean:

Notice how even though the cursor is free, the dock stops responding to its movement and the app icon stops its bouncing. Apps that take moments to load are taking up to a minute.

Not sure what the cause might be. Haven't installed anything or changed any Clover or UEFI settings.

UPDATE: Unplugging Ethernet (was plugged into smalltree port) seems to have fixed it? FWIW I was having connectivity issues yesterday but I think they were caused by the switch/WiFi hotspot in this room. I've switched to the bottom port for now, though I do get worse network performance with it.

Memory is Corsair Vengeance LPX 2400MHZ. I'll try to remember to leave MemTest running the next time I'm away from the studio, but I never had trouble with this memory for over a year using an ASUS Z370 board. In the meantime, I have to get work done today so I won't have time to troubleshoot until evening I think.

I just completed my build and am having great success. I'm even using an LG 5k / GC-Titan Ridge (without thunderbolt header) / z390 Designare and it's running at the FULL 5k!! I love it! A big thank you to @CaseySJ and the rest of the community.

Hardware:
Intel Core i9-9900 (non k)
Z390 Designare
32GB TridentZ Neo 3600MHz (No external disks so the eject problem is a non issue for me)
Broadcom bcm94360cs2 card in a 1x adapter
GC-Titan Ridge AIC R1.0 with no connectors in the Middle 4x long slot
Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 580 8GB (connected with 2 DP -> MDP cables into Titan ridge)
Gigabyte Aorus m.2 1tb SSD (I know this card is gen4 but the board is only gen3. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It was a gift.)
525gb Crucial MX300 SSD

What's working:
Sound
Graphics / Acceleration
Bluetooth / Wifi
Sleep / Wake
Handoff / Continuity
Both LAN ports
Most creature comforts

What's NOT working:
Sidecar (No idea what's going on there, I've attached the crash log)
Sound / Webcam / Brightness from the LG 5k display (I'm not using the thunderbolt header so this is expected though)

Config:
SMBIOS: iMac Pro 1,1
Clover 5070
Boot args: slide=0
Patches: Pike's Black screen fix (instead of Whatevergreen), SATA0 -> SATA, HDAS -> HDEF, Enable TRIM.

Final thoughts:
I'm considering exchanging out the Designare for the Aorus Pro so that I can get the Titan Ridge card working fully.
If anyone has any thoughts about why Sidecar is crashing, let me know. If anyone has any questions about my setup, I'll try to respond as soon as I get a chance.

Thanks again everyone! It feels so good to have a hackintosh again.

Pinging @CaseySJ since it might be relevant to him.

Hey, it's me, the EFIClone backup guy!
I originally posted a fixed version of wombat94's script here a few months back, however recently I discovered that it no longer worked properly because apparently CCC changed how it mounted the respective drives (it's now using a temporary location in /private/tmp/). As such the script would fail on newer versions (and especially on Catalina, since that version now breaks things into a system and a data volume).

I've figured out a way to dynamically determine the disk ID from that temporary mount location and fixed the script with this enhancement such that it should now be able to work for all backup situations again, without the need to hard-code the root (/) path into it. I've just tried it on the latest Catalina Beta and it worked fine, however please note that I do not have a setup which would allow me to test all edge cases this script might have, so use this at your own risk.

I also updated the description of the repository to be a bit more user-friendly and linked Casey's bootable backup section in the README just in case (and because it's excellent).
