Radeon VII (and new AMD gpus) compatibility

Thanks for your guys working together to fix the slow down and lag. Great fix!

Thanks guys for the AppleHDADisabler. My system is stable now after installing it in my clover EFI folder (crossing fingers).

I currently have 10.4.6 running with the i9 7980XE, ASUS WS X299 Sage motherboard, & ThunderboltEX 3 adapter. I would constantly get random kernel panics after installing a newly bought ASRock Radeon VII - KP time would vary from 20 minutes to 2 hours from boot time.

I wasn't getting the KP with a dual 1080ti setup before - had to switch obviously since latest Nvidia cards aren't supported. Although the onboard sound is disabled on my system, I'm using my OWC thunderbolt 3 hub to get audio. It shows as OWC Thunderbolt 3 Audio Device on my system preferences.

So far so good. No slowdowns or KPs. Premiere Pro and Davinci Resolve are running smooth using Metal.

@Jevens,
You're welcome. I refused to stop until I solved this, AMD has a no return policy and there was no way I was getting stuck with a $700 paperweight!

Although I would still consider this fix temporary until someone with the proper knowledge can help us with a Clover patch so we don't also have to forfeit onboard audio along with the display audio to fix this.

@xxxslayeriiixxx,
Glad to hear. Mine's been solid for days now, so much so that I've boxed the old Vega 56 back up. :)
As I mentioned above though, I think we need a proper patch to specifically address just the issue with AppleGFXHDA; manually removing it every update is a pain, and losing onboard audio as part of this fix is not optimal.

Now that I had gotten the card to play nice in Mac OS, I finally flipped over to Windows to check out gaming performance. Unfortunately, I'm plagued with the "black screen" crash where randomly, screen goes black and audio stays for a bit, then system locks forcing hard reset. Googling shows this has been happening since March and for many people, and on the latest Adrenalin + Win 10 it's still doing it. #womp

Between such slow updating, poor performance and support in Windows as well as broken native support in Mac OS coupled with AMD dropping production of these cards...I think I'm abandoning ship, at least for now. I can't even game on the card in Windows unfortunately. I can't wait in hopes it'll come around as the card loses value by the day. : /

I'll keep my eyes here as time goes on and maybe I'll come back to one down the road! Happy to have helped sort a temporary fix, at least. Best of luck!

It's weird. I gamed a lot with the AsRock VII and AMD VII on Windows, no black screens at all. Maybe you should try to reinstall it or wipe the drivers?

My windows 10 is flawless too, maybe try fresh install.

@EpicNUFO

if the card goes to black like that, then you might have a dud. My first VII (sapphire)would hardcrash windows if I tried “auto undervolt mode” in AMD Wattman. Thougt it was a driver issue, but turns out the card was slowly dying. Got a replacement (sapphire too), and it runs on lower stock volt then previous, and no hardcrash on “auto undervolt mode”.

You can try and make adjustments in Wattman (try undervolt the card to see if it gets more stable - or the opposite, if it just needs more juice to keep stable without hardcrash).

If the game crashes to windows with gpu driver error, that means your close to getting stable and you either need to back off undervolting or the opposite if your overvolting (without overclocking).

The dud card I had liked to run at max 1750mhz, -50% power, not touching ram, and undervolted (did many tests to see the limit voltage). Made a fan curve that progressed more around the 84-85c, for a more quiet experience.

Just my 2 cents about the VII.

Thanks guys, honestly all this was enough to give me cold feet; not trying to have this much hassle with a $700 piece of kit. I'm going to wait out further support from Apple and AMD and see what happens. I was lucky to get AMD to agree to a return with the kernel panic evidence from both Mac OS and Windows combined. Seems normally they don't take returns on opened items. I'm going to take the opportunity to get my money back sans shipping and stick with the Vega for a bit longer.

Thanks again guys!

Ohlala - this seems a bit discouraging to get a Radeon Vii -
For a lot of video work I was looking at blouse's setup (Aorus 390 Pro/9900k, but with a ASRock radeon vii)
Has anybody used that board for that?

Hi Epic

Keep your AppleGFXHDA.kext in your S/L/E and Try KextsToPatch in Clover
