[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

with 10.14.5 i strongly recommend the imac19 system definition. This along with the headless platformID is working perfectly for CPU native power management and IGPU acceleration and pro apps. Also Radeon VII is working well now. just need an SSDT for HDMI/DP audio or the new whatevergreen with radeon vii support to get audio working over DP again.

Which platform ID are you using? My Devices tab in CC >> Properties is blank, and everything seems to be working great.

Hello Jamesbond007,

I encountered the same problem with the two USB 2 ports (HS09 / HS10) when installing Mojave 10.14.4 a few weeks ago. The USB port limit patches did not activate these ports, but the USB SSDT (which requires USBInjectAll.kext) enables the ports without any problem.

Have you tried copying the SSDT-UIAC-DESIGNARE-Z390-V6.aml to the ACPI/patched folder, and installing USBInjectAll.kext in both CLOVER/kexts/Other and /Library/Extensions?

Thank you for your suggestions. I shall try later.

Still, seems pretty odd to me that those USB2 ports can be activated when the BIOS is at F5, but not when the BIOS is at F6. Something substantial must have been changed in F6 apart from support for new 9th generation CPUs and 32GB RAM sticks.

There is also another problem in that when I choose to shutdown in Sierra 10.12.6, the system seems to shutdown but then restarts, while shutdown in High Sierra 10.13.6 works properly.

Did you update to the F6 BIOS before you attempted to install 10.14.4?

I am not yet convinced of the need to switch system definition to iMac19,1. More specific information is needed.
  • Native CPU power management is already active with “PluginType” checked on.
  • IGPU acceleration is also enabled already.
  • Pro Apps are also working properly with a headless platform ID (0x3E980003).
Changing sysdef is the same as switching to a different Mac. All of your applications will have to be re-licensed. This can be time consuming and it can cause system downtime. If someone has to produce a Final Cut or Adobe Premiere video by 3pm tomorrow, for example, they could miss their deadline.

Therefore, “strongly recommending” the new sysdef is not a wise or responsible thing to do.

I would strongly recommend caution. Don’t even think about changing sysdef unless you know the implications. You should de-register your apps ahead of time, and re-register afterwards. Check with the software developer if necessary to ensure that you can re-register the app.

I expect to do a fresh install of 10.14.5 on a spare SSD using sysdef iMac19,1 and will run various benchmarks to see whether it makes any material difference.

If someone has already done a before and after comparison, please share your findings.

I’ve been on F6 since its release, so 10.14.4 was installed with F6. I never suspected that the problem with USB 2 ports might be related to firmware.

I do not find any thing scary. This is so smooth on my machine. And it is the same as previous updates.
Please update your profile information: CPU, GPU, Motherboard.

Hey Casey. Your guide is excellent and i really appreciate all your hard work...
Doing more testing would always be appreciated. I am just reporting my findings. I had problems getting Pro Apps AND quicksync working on my setup with any of the previous methods and 10.14.5- And i did not want to use imacPro and disable iGPU. imac19 is the closest match to our actual hardware right now.

You are correct about it being like "switching" to another mac- however we are in control of our serial numbers and UUID strings so in fact you can make the switch without confusing any software. Also adobe seems tied to disk UUID at least in my experience and only resets when you change drives- new mac or not. Final Cut does not reset- its based on your appleID. in fact almost no software will have license issues even if you do change your device serials, etc. That said its never a good idea to make changes of any kind if your setup is working and you have a deadline at 3PM tomorow- no more than you would decide to update your software application(s) in such a scenario. Most people (should) know to do software updates between projects unless you are dealing with some sort of major problem.

PS- got DP audio back using @kgp 's SSDT for Radeon VII and adapting to our board. That SSDT is in his repository with 10.14.5 beta files.

*** macOS 10.14.5 Update ***

Just completed the 10.14.5 update, but this update was somewhat scary compared to previous updates. Here's what you should do and what you should expect:
  • Make a complete bootable backup of your system. Use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. Backup the EFI folder as well.
    • Your bootable backup will not be bootable until the EFI folder is copied from the Mojave EFI partition to the EFI partition of the clone drive.
  • Ensure that your USB SSDT is installed and your USB port limit patches in config.plist are Disabled.
    • The Mojave 10.14.4 USB port limit patch is not compatible with 10.14.5.
  • Begin the update from System Preferences --> Software Update.
  • Here's what you can expect during the update itself:
    • After the 2.5GB download, the system will logout and begin installation.
    • A progress bar will appear. A few seconds later the system will spontaneously reboot.
    • At the Clover Boot Menu, "Boot Install macOS from Mojave" will be auto-selected. In the rare event that it is not, use arrow keys to select it yourself.
    • The standard startup process will begin -- an Apple Icon in the center with a progress bar below.
    • Midway through, you might see small purple horizontal lines (@Abdala's screenshot) randomly drawn at the top of the screen. DON'T PANIC and don't interrupt the system. Just wait...
    • About 30 seconds later the screen will go blank. Again, DON'T PANIC. Just wait.
    • The startup process will resume and the macOS Updater will begin. You might see "45 minutes remaining" or something similar.
    • But a few seconds later (maybe 10 seconds) the system will spontaneously reboot! This is normal.
    • At the Clover Boot Menu, "Boot Install macOS from Mojave" will again be auto-selected. In the rare event that it is not, use arrow keys to select it yourself.
    • Now you'll see the Apple Icon in the center once again, and a progress bar below.
    • Midway through, those random horizontal purple lines will reappear. Just wait.
    • About 30 seconds later the screen will go blank again. Just wait.
    • Now the macOS installer will appear and you'll see "45 minutes remaining" or something similar. This should take much less than 45 minutes. The installer will complete the installation now.
    • At the end, the system will gracefully reboot with a 10 second countdown. Let it be.
    • At the Clover Boot Menu, the standard option will now be selected: Boot macOS from Mojave. Don't change it.
    • During this final startup phase you might see those horizontal purple lines again for a second. Don't worry. The system will rebuild kernel caches (which means startup can be a few seconds longer than normal) and then the login screen should appear.
  • Congratulations. You're now on 10.14.5

Notice below that 10.14.5 properly recognizes the i9-9700K processor!!

EDIT: If you have a Core i9-9900K, your processor will be incorrectly reported as a Core i7. To fix this problem, set CPU Type to 0x1005 in Clover Configurator. Thanks to @3Dman for the tip.

I do not want to be controversial, but maybe @3Dman, also has a real iMac.ioreg to know the true cpu-type, but I think the information was obtained from my post
If I'm wrong, I apologize.

@genzai, if I recall correctly from three hundred pages ago(!), some UAD or other audio interface software has rather restrictive license policies. Audio is often imported into Final Cut and Premiere projects. And many plugins are also licensed. So a Final Cut or Premiere or Photoshop project can depend on a set of discrete licenses.

Not everyone has a large set of licenses to worry about, and for them it may be okay to switch to a different system definition.

Note that with MacMini8,1 or iMac18,3 it is not necessary to disable iGPU in BIOS. However, iMacPro1,1 requires disabling iGPU — and it provides a minimal gain in benchmark performance.

It would be helpful to compare render times and synthetic benchmarks between iMacPro1,1 and Macmini8,1 and iMac19,1. I don’t think the differences will be substantial (probably 2 to 5%) but it would be good to gather the data and let users decide for themselves what is best.

Another memorable Star Trek quote:
“Just because you can do a thing, it does not follow that you must do that thing.” LLAP.
