Stork's MyHero II Build: ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z370 HERO X - i7-8700K - AMD RX 580 - Thunderbolt 3

What do you run that you are using up 128GB? Are you sure one of your apps don't have a memory leak? If you need 128GB, you can do a build with X299.

i9-9900K is running solid for me. Every bit as solid as my i7-8700K did. I think I recored over 40 days of uptime in macOS.

I have a very diverse job in that I oversee many projects that are extremely variable. Unfortunately I have over 30-50 apps open at any given time and push the limits (ranging from Photoshop and other design apps to multiple browsers to development IDEs and Terminal/shell apps). I had a fight with an Apple engineer about 11 years ago about how hard I push macOS and their expectation of me to limit my work diversity... I'm just too busy to deal with people telling me I push computers too hard! :D

I will give Apple props in that Mojave is doing better than any OS release has done for several years, but they're still disgusting regarding their focus on iOS and neglect of macOS largely.

@golfleep I finally had contact to Asus (Germany) and they could help me out. Different than expected, but a pragmatical solution for me.
First of all they sent me a screenshot of a BIOS management tool different to the one that ships with the Maximus X Hero. They are using one tool for different board´s BIOSses. But this tool showed the missing toggle to switch between iGPU and PEG. As they had no explanation why the toggle is not in the onboard tool, they simply took a standard 1801 BIOS, activated iGPU MultiMonitoring as well as PEG as primary boot device and sent me the modified file.
So now I have these options set as desired, but the option to toggle between the settings is of course not enabled in the onboard BIOS tool.
The problem is most probably not the BIOS but the tool. I don´t know if (and how!) there will ever be updates to the boards own BIOS management tool. We´ll see...

Hello Everyone,
Thank you @Stork for the great guide. I built a few Gigabyte Hackintoshes in the past, and it was a first with the ASUS board. After a few hours of wandering in the dark, I managed to have it up and running. I pretty much followed your build which helps a lot. Even though it's my 4th or 5th Hackintosh, I still feel very noob :)

There's only a few things left that are still not working, I tried the different helps from the site but without success... So if anyone could give me a hand it would be fantastic.

I'm unable to have the Mac recognize the Bluetooth from the Fenvi, I tried different workarounds but unsuccessful.

I have the reboot problem on shutdown. It was working and in the tweaking process for other things, the reboot is back again.

I have the Fans on all the time and HW Monitor don't have any power on changing the speed of the fans. I see them turning at 1300 rpm but unable to change them.

And finally, I had a Nvidia Geforce graphic card that was doing a lot of artifact. Changed to AMD, to the Saffire RX 580, and it's running smooth now. .

All the rest, USB3 front and back, WiFi, iMessage, etc., are working perfectly.

I'm attaching the config.plist in case it can help you or @pastrychef, or the whole Clover file in zip!

Thanks!

Max

Ok I’m ready to jump! :)
I have all the components except the HD and the tower.
Can I go with: 512GB Samsung 970 Pro M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0 x4 (MZ-V7P512BW) ?

Any advice on the tower for this build please?

The Samsung 970 Pro will work.

As for the computer case, I'd look at a mid tower size because of your use of the on-board NVMe M.2 SSD socket. Unless you have a lot of HDDs, a mid tower size will be nice on your desk. I like the Fractal Design Refine series and the Lian Li PC-A05FNB Computer Case which I list in Post #1. But, I recommend you go look at computer cases at a store near you; that will help you make up your mind.

just wanted to share what I have accomplished today with my hackintosh with a little tool called Geektool!! Its absolutely amazing! Everything is embeded on the desktop!

Thank you I will go for the Fractal Design Define R6 Black ;)

Is it an issue if remplace the FENVI and the SYBA you recommande by another component from the buyer guide?

Looking for some ideas on RGB lighting with this build. I have a separate SSD with windows on it and have all my lights set to blue and the case fans, graphics card and RAM lights all show blue and are disabled during sleep in Windows. On the Mac SSD, the case fans are blue, but the graphics card (ASUS GTX 1080 Ti) does a breathing orange led effect and the RAM (Trident Z) does a rainbow RGB effect.

The most annoying thing though is when my hackintosh is sleeping. The RAM LEDs stay in the rainbow mode and light up my whole room. Whereas in Windows, if I turn the RAM LEDs off, they stay off in sleep as well since I have set LEDs to be off during sleep in the BIOS. So I am not sure why some settings carry over from Windows but others do not. Does anyone know how to disable the RAM RGB LEDs on hackintosh side during sleep, or even just as a whole if that is needed? Thanks.

@Stork, do you have any magic in you config.plist for clock speeds? I use "Sync all cores" in BIOS which works great in Windows, in macOS I "only" got 4500MHz in PowerGadget as well as iStat Menus. Would be great if you can have a short look, maybe I did something wrong in my config.plist, see below.

Thanks,
Ole
