I would like to know if I can get away with running a monitor that is not in the buying guide. Is it going to be difficult to get it to work? I am using the machine for colour grading, so I am quite specific about what I will choose. But it will most likely be an Asus, Dell, or LG monitor.

You can chose whatever you want. Of course try to avoid VGA/DVI. Displayport is the way to go.

Thanks, and you would not have to do anything different than what you would have to do when installing the monitors in the buyers guide?
