You are lucky. Many Skylake and newer systems are experiencing the lag. I get it even on a completely clean install...
I had the lag with 10.13.3 and Nvidia web drivers. Updated today to supplemental 10.13.3 + latest Nvidia for supplemental :no lag this time (cross fingers).

Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, the last lag free version of the Nvidia web drivers was .104.

iMac14,2 definition would cause my system to randomly shut down on its own

iMac14,2 disadvantages
Random, unexplained shut downs (Update: Somehow, pmset autoshutdown was set to 1. Changing it to 0 fixed it.)

I'm using iMac 14,2 and experiencing not-so-random shutdowns. It happens mostly when a new 'process' is about to start. It can be a heavy process like Adobe Media Encoder starting a batch or a very easy one, like spacebar photo preview in Finder.
Did you notice any common behavior with your shutdowns?
From what you stated in the second quote, the "pmset autoshudown" update, I would say that your shutdown only occurred while the computer was sleeping. Is that the case?

I'm trying to narrow down my options to know if it's worth changing my system defs.

I have begun using iMac18,3 system definition because it most closely matches my hardware now.

Now a less experienced hackintosher asking a more experienced one.
If I were to change my system defs, 18,3 would do the job for me too?

Thanks! And congrats on your builds!

Hi!

My auto shutdown issues were entirely due to the "autoshutdown" setting. Apparently, it's set that way by default to comply to some sort of European law. Once I figured out the cause and changed the setting, my system no longer shut down on its own.

If you are experiencing random shutdowns due to load, I would suggest monitoring CPU temps. From what I've read, overclockers typically recommend trying to keep CPU temps at 80C or less.

Excessive heat on GPU can also cause problems but I believe that with a GTX 1080, it will throttle itself down before shutting down, but it may still be worth watching.

Other things that can only help any hackintosh build are implementing (1) CPU power management and (2) proper USB settings. CPU power management can be easily set up with either SSDT.aml or setting PluginType=true in config.plist. Proper USB port limit fix is bit more involved but prohibitively difficult.

If/when you decided to change the system definition to iMac18,3, I would recommend generating new serial number, UUID, and board serial number.

Since you are on a Kaby Lake CPU, I think changing system definition to iMac18,3 can only help and can do no harm.

MultiBeast will help you update to iMac18,3 as it provides a new serial number, UUID, and board serial number when you just choose:
Customization > System Definitions > iMac > iMac18,3
Build
Install
Then, reboot.

You will probably have to use Clover Configurator to help get iMessage working. Check out P1LGRIM's two guides:

Thanks for the fast reply!

I would suggest monitoring CPU temps

I monitor my temps since day 1, and they never went over 62ºC. The funny thing is I have been able to render very heavy projects that required more than 16 hours on full load, non stop. And it didn't turn off! And my processor is the 7700, not the 7700k. So no overclocking for me, I think. (I've read somewhere it's possible because of my board, but I'm not sure if it is actually overclockable)

(1) CPU power management and (2) proper USB settings

Now that you mentioned, I have a theory about USB – it happens more frequently when working with files from external drives, but it has happened with internal files too. So I'll check those two links you pointed out, since they can only bring good things for my system.

I've read a little bit about overclocking the non-K Kaby Lake CPUs. It seemed extremely "hacky" and, personally, I would avoid it.
