Ersterhernd's NUCiMac G4

Sorry. Wasn't intending that. Just need some help :)

The NUCiMac is now updated to OSX 10.9 Mavericks. Note that I started with a fully functional OSX 10.8.5 Mtn Lion install, only missing the supplemental update. The i3 NUC in this system only has one mSATA SSD total size of 256 GB, divided into two equal 128GB partitions. Here's the steps I used to do it.

1. Backup of 10.8.5 to 2nd partition using SuperDuper.
2. Create bootable Mavericks USB stick with UniBeast.
3. Replace S/L/E AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext on USB stick with patched one.
4. Put NUC DSDT.aml into /Extra folder on USB. (Use ShowAllFiles to display hidden folders)
5. Download MultiBeast 6.0, Chimera 2.2.1 and Chameleon svn 2266 to partition two.
6. Install Chimera onto 2nd partition to make it bootable.
7. Boot to Mavericks USB stick, no kernel flags needed.
8. Install Mavericks as an Update to 10.8.5 on Partition One. No Erase required.
9. Restart to partition two, 10.8.5 Mtn Lion. (unplug the USB stick first)
10. Using MultiBeast 6.0 apply necessary patches to Mavericks as follows...
a) TrimEnabler 10.9 Patch
b) FakeSMC and plugins
c) Hnak's Network driver
d) AppleIntelCpuPowerManagement.kext for OSX 10.9
11. Install Chimera 2.2.1 to Mavericks Partition One
12. Install Chameleon svn 2266 (bootloader and FileNVRAM option) to Mavericks Partition
(Step 12 is for proper iMessage activation & functionality)
13. Restart to Mavericks Partition. Enjoy!

Everything works on my iMac G4, including sleep and rewake. It takes longer for the machine to go to sleep than it did on 10.8.5, perhaps 15 to 20 secs on Hibernate 0 mode. For iMessage to work, I had to log in to Apple's site and change my password.

Prior to using this method, I tried a base install too, using Migration Assistant to bring my Apps and Settings over from my backed up 10.8.5 Mtn Lion. Unfortunately doing it this way was unsuccessful because Sleep did not work properly. The system rewoke to a black screen and dead OS. Using the update method, leaving the Current 10.8.5 install on partition One (without Erase) was the only way I could get full functionality including sleep. Of course the results of others may vary.

Omg I absolutely need to do this

Came here for the G4 lampshade

Hi J,

I discovered a much easier way when I built my first iMac 20" project. It requires a couple of careful solder connections on the Molex DVI part you'll be using, but avoids having to obtain extra iMac pinned TMDS wires.

To Complete the DVI connection, I used this method of soldering the 1KOhm resistor directly to the DVI pins 14 and 16. I used an extra iMac G4 wire for pin 15, although it would have been just as effective to solder a small wire directly to the pin, so no additional pinned wire would be required. I did this work prior to connecting any of the other pins. To obtain a VEDID signal, I soldered TMDS 15 (hot pink wire) directly to 3.3V from the PicoPSU.

This turned out to be a simpler solution than rewiring the Vedid/Hot Plug Detect loop into the TMDS.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip ersterhernd.

I'm almost ready to start working on my 17" imac mod. However, I've got a couple of questions, I hope you still read this message:

+ Why you all speak about having a second imac G4 unit to employ its neck wires? Couldn't it be used normal wires? Moreover considering that with the tip of the image above, only one wire is needed! Regarding this question, which diameter wires should be employed?

If I jog my memory, it was not so much the wires themselves, but the female connecting pins on the ends that were the issue.

I've retired both of my 17" builds to re-use parts elsewhere but still use the 20" iMac G4 as a showcase retro system in my office. The empty shells of the 17 inchers sit peacefully under a towel in the closet.

Cheers!

Thanks for the clarification Ersterhernd. Got it... I guess you were speakng about these female connectors:

I think I'll stick to the tip mentioned above and won't get second imac neck. In understand soldering the 1kohm resistor at pin 14 and 16 but, where does it go the small wire soldered to pin 15 at the MOLEX DVI connector?

It's a pitty you don't use the 17" builds anymore! In my case I'm a final year high school student that had to prepare the final project for Electronics subject. Looking into my father's workshop I discover the imac G4 and here I am! I told the teacher about the project and although he initially didn't even understand the goal, he has been very supportive (though little aid really helped me :)

Cheers! -and happy Christmas to everybody!

Hello from the future. If someone in 2020 has to carry out this project, I recommend the following:

1: Don't solder the DVI cables, buy a male DVI and use these little pin cables. It is easier and cheaper.

2: To supply 3.3v or 5v, buy a 12 source, and connect it to arduino mini PSU with variable voltage from 1.5v to 24v, and here you will get all the necessary voltages.

Nice work. I have 2x iMac G4 - 17 inch - 1,25ghz.
When apple is releasing the new Mac mini with ARM processor, I probably will then mod/upgrade my iMac G4.
