Hello Gang... I am seriously a beginner here with a system I built several years ago... I am using Clover with M.L. on a usb stick.. to start I have to push the on button & then F12 until I can select my usb stick, then I select my OS on my ssd & off we go..

I am able to get Sierra as well as High Sierra? or 10.12.6 w/ update.. (i was assuming this was high sierra as I do have the machine to install it) I saw the Direct Update to macOS Sierra using Clover, but it talks about OS X El Capitan as a starting point. I was told I should be able to get there from ML.. questions are:

1) I see the guide but somehow, I don't understand it when I try to start the process.. I installed Clover_v2.4k_r4200.zip, FakeSMC-v6.21-311-g2958f55.1723.zip, 98168-EFI-Mounter-v3.zip.. how do I update your existing Clover install? are we talking on the usb stick?? o_O

2) on the usb stick, I was able to Copy FakeSMC.kext and any other extra necessary kexts to /EFI/CLOVER/kexts/Other/ but it talked about Open Clover configuration folder on the root of your system drive or EFI Partition using EFI Mounter v3 i opened it but it asked me to pick a efi partition because i have 3 of them... the usb is disk 3S1 my choices are 0, 1 or 2.. which should I choose??:eek:

I am sorry to be a pain I just need to update my system & wish there was a simpler step by step vid .. (is there??):banghead: any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank in advance...

Take a look at this guide. It should get you a bit further don't use SSDT-HACK. (Guide) H77N-WIFI with Intel HD4000 using Clover UEFI Hotpatch | tonymacx86.com. Use a config from https://github.com/VoiletDragon/Z77X-UD5H-Clover-Hotpatch-Patches

Thank you so much for such a fast response. I just spent 5 hours and cant get past step #1.. sorry to say Im a putz (yipee?)
tried to open terminal to use the line your guide indicated..

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/USB --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app

..but it responds.. command not found

I have sierra but its bundled up, every time I try to open to install in application folder, it says... must have 10.12 for it to open... i did say i was a rank amateur right?? lol.. (more hardware savvy) ill try again tomorrow after a had another cuppa... perhaps, it will make sense.. if you noticed anything, let me know.. is it possible to go from ML straight to Sierra??

All the best!

Where do you have the Sierra App? and from where did you get it?

I guess I dl from the apple store.. I have been a mac owner for years & use this site from time to time.. (macbook use) when I went to it, I had access & dl both "macosupd10.12.6.dmg & macosupdcombo10.12.6.dmg" (this is the files in my computer) I don't know the difference as it is not explained on the apple store site.. I figured I ask you all as you are most experienced on these matters.. I just build systems.. software is alien to me.. thats why the "handholding" required in this build.. I would like to update asap .. as you know, programs wont work right anymore because of s.w. age.. Thank You for asking.. Freddie

The Sierra app should be in applications no where else.

I understand but since my computer updates from the app store, i just clicked on dl.. it showed up as a dmg file.. when I use terminal.. and use your "sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/USB --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app" it asks for a command, I dont know this?? if it is the one for "administrators", I tried & I get:

Last login: Tue Sep 19 16:40:22 on ttys000
localhost:~ thegreatsocialexperiment$ sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/USB --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app
Password:
sudo: /Applications/Install macOS Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia: command not found
localhost:~ thegreatsocialexperiment$

everytime i click on to open the "macOSUdpd10.12.6" to try to place in applications, it replies.. 'ALERT This update requires macOS version 10.12.

so Im stuck at the moment.. any thoughts?? Thanx

Not so, you do not get dmg OS installers from the App Store, this is evident in the failure of createinstallmedia :

when I use terminal.. and use your "sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/USB --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app" it asks for a command,

Well, he downloaded the wrong files. Both those files are updater applications to an existing Sierra 10.12.5 or earlier installation of Sierra. Thus, they can't be used for installing Sierra.

tmetravler, you need to use your existing Mac(Book) or hackintosh to go log into the Apple's Mac App Store and download the Sierra installer. When the installer finishes downloading the Sierra Installer, it will open. Quit the installer and proceed to use UniBeast to make a USB Installation Thumb Drive as per the tonymacx86 guide > https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...ierra-on-any-supported-intel-based-pc.200564/. Forget about using any other method.

BTW, tmetravler, how did you create that Mountain Lion USB "stick"?

from what i understand, we used a usb stick or zip drive to have clover & ml on it.. so it is always attached to my system .. when i start up, I have to keep the f12 key pushed down until it gives me a choice of where to get the initial start up stuff..( see, I can put together any system together blindfolded but software does me in good!) i select the M.L. from usb & off we go.. (actually a few more steps but why embarrass myself more?) Thanks for the info..

BTW @Stork Thank you so much for clarifying this, I went to the store like I normally would & tried to locate os installer.. what happened was I forgot to update my cc info. As soon as I did, the Sierra os instantly downloaded directly into the apps folder & then the "Install macOS Sierra" page popped up .. cool! I will try after I use time machine for my backup.. Once again Thank You all for your patience & understanding to help a very green novice! Cheers!
