Hello. I have been running a Hackintosh built - not by me - in about November 2011.

It is running 10.8.2 Mountain Lion.

It was built with this site's tools (Unibeast).

I've avoided updating the OS, not wanting to break the system, and performance has gotten slower over time as programs like Firefox update.

Today I have been having issues with the internet not working, on this computer only, or working suspiciously slowly. Right now it's not working at all.

Running Disk Utility shows an "Invalid volume free block count - The volume Mac was found corrupt and needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD."

I don't have a bootable disk that could run Disk Utility on this. To create one with UniBeast seems to require an OSX installer, which I don't have either.

The internet was working earlier, I think because I ran Repair Disk Permissions. The permissions keep differing on the JavaAppletPlugin, and user/bin/tar. Every time I restart it seems to reset wrong.

Bare in mind that the problem with Internet not working can be caused by APIs/Certificates being out of date. If you can still access the App Store then you could download macOS Sierra and update. Id recommend upgrading to at least Mavericks or El Capitan just to be secure.

I was concerned that upgrading the OS might brick the system. I'm not sure if a Hackintosh of this sort has special needs.

The internet was working at one point today but is not currently. This is a new situation, as it worked fine for years.

If it is related to the Java utility, I just updated that today - in an effort to fix the problem. (May have made it worse.)

Please follow the rules and enter your board/CPU/GPU info into your profile and your sig.
Do you have a back-up/TimeMachine drive separate from your system drive? If yes, suggest you make a small partition large enough to clone your ML to it and do a TM backup as well.

If you still have a UniBeast USB for ML, that is an installation drive. You should be able to hit the board hotkey that allows you to select a boot device, select the USB and hit enter to boot it. You cant then use the disk utility to wipe your system drive and do a clean install. When was the UniBeast USB created? If the installer is out of date, reset your BIOS clock to the date/time ML was released before booting the USB installer.

You have misunderstood my post. I do not have a Unibeast USB / Installation drive currently. I was inquiring about how to get one to at least run Disk Utility.

I don't have all my files backed up and have no intention currently of wiping the drive and doing a clean install. I would be likely to lose a lot of important material.

My information is in my profile/sig.

I don't have an OSX installer and Mountain Lion is no longer readily provided in the app store.

I am unsure if updating my system to a newer version of OSX would brick my system. Updates are certainly available.

If you are running ML Disk Utility is available in Apps->Utilities

10.8.2 is not a board I have ever heard of. Who makes it? What PCH does it have? Northbridge? Southbridge?

ML is only available to someone with an Apple account that has previously downloaded it.

There is always the chance of bricking your installation when you upgrade. That is why you are always advised to backup/clone before proceeding. If you are having problems with system lag - slow response, spinning beachball when opening apps, excessive bouncing of the app icon in the dock, etc. then it is always preferred to wipe the drive and fresh install the OS.

I'm not sure if you're trolling me, but you've misunderstood me again in multiple ways.

Mountain Lion is an older version of OSX and it is not possible to get a free version of it from the app store currently. If my internet hadn't stopped working, it would be possible to upgrade and possibly brick the system. I don't have the free time to take that risk right now, nor are all my files backed up. Nor do I have any kind of OSX installer.

I wanted to run Repair Disk in Disk Utility, which is not possible without some sort of Boot Disk.

My specs are in my profile and sig, and I expected a less nonsensical conversation than this.

I do not troll - since you do not seem to understand my directions so here are some Pics to make them clearer.

Repair disk in Disk Utility in Mountain Lion Apps folder is same as that on the USB installer.

As you can see from this pic from ML 10.8.5. Launch Disk Utility, select the drive - not the Mac partition, click on the Verify Disk button on bottom right. If the scan finds anything wrong, it will list it and the Repair button becomes active. Click on the Repair button and wait. It will list everything it repairs or is not able to repair - you can scroll through it.
I am done.
