Hi,
Im using a GT710 with Sierra's inbuilt drivers and am looking for for a brief description of what is needed to get HDMI audio working.

I have looked at the main HDMI audio thread and have flicked through the hundreds of posts in the support thread and can see that the answers are nearly always already there in the instructions but try as I might I cant seem to see what is required to make a supported card work.

In general terms - What do I need to do to get HDMI audio working here?

Hi Toleda
not wishing to seem ungrateful because I can see both how much work you have put into this site and how many people you have helped but this reply is not helpful, as I said in my question "I can see that the answers are nearly always already there in the instructions." I am reasonable literate but lack competence in this area and find the guide is too distilled and whilst the bare information is there, I am unable to follow along for it to be useful in my case, looking at the hundreds of posts in the support thread, many of which are repeats of similar problems, makes me think I am not alone.

If there is a more readable guide please point me to it or if you are able to understand the difficulty of a novice and communicate in a more helpful manner to me please do.

Exactly, what is not "readable"?
3. Installation
  1. Mount EFI
  2. SIP enabled, OK
  3. Intel: HDMI display only, disconnect DP display
  4. Double click: Downloads/audio_cloverHDMI-1....command
  5. Answer y/n questions
  6. Password
  7. Restart
Did you try the script?

Reading 2000 posts is a big waste of time. The problem is macOS HDMI audio does not work natively on non native hardware. The purpose of that thread is working HDMI audio for any interested user, including you; your choice.

Hi Toleda,
Yes I did try the script (I get no audio driver found error) but I'm unsure if I have followed the instructions because I can't tell if I'm following the right path through them.

Using the instructions you just quoted as an example - I would read them as saying - Mount the EFI partition, enable SIP, ensure monitor is plugged into Intel HDMI port and run the script. Now, although some detail about getting the script to run would be nice (downloading as a zip rather than command, do i need sudo, or change permissions etc.) that isn't the issue I was pointing to: What I was trying to point to was that I need to understand the logic of your instructions but without understanding all the complexities that it deals with, that logic is, despite what you might think, not clear: Even in your last reply here I'm uncertain if the example you gave is meant to be applicable to me here because I would have thought there would be no output on the Intel HDMI port in this case but Im not sure.

I don't think I'm alone in this confusion and can use the support thread to support my argument.

Years ago I used to import and sell modems (with an eye watering top speed of 9600 bps) they came with an instruction manual that was sufficient if you knew about AT commands and how modems worked but wasn't useful if all you knew was that you wanted to be able to dial into a bulletin board because the maunal read like a data sheet. When I realised just how much of my time was being spent supporting buyers I rewrote the instruction manual and included the re-write in each one sold - it reduced the support calls and return rates dramatically.

I was once told that to get a well written guide you should not let the technical lead write the instructions because they were unlikely to be a good judge of what was obvious and what needed explaining and it would be better to get the least competent engineer or someone who was not part of the project team to write the instructions which would then be checked by the expert.

I know that some knowledge is presumed and it would be fair statement that I could read up on this to make the instructions more understandable but the content of the HDMI Audio thread together with the repetition of many of the posts compared to say the CPU power management thread, makes me think that this particular guide is capable of being expanded to be more understandable.

Again I'd like to say your work is most appreciated - it is obvious that you are a great asset to this community but maybe you could take a novice's word here - the instructions could do with some filling out.

My first query still stands. When I wrote it, I was hoping you would not reply - no disrespect intended but Ive seen your RTFM one liners and was hoping someone with more knowledge than me (but maybe less than you) would reply with something more useful to me that I could then use in conjunction with your guide.
