If you're certain you'll never use Thunderbolt then I'd go with the UD3 version instead.

Well, I'm pretty sure I'll be sticking with my current USB Scarlett Focusrite 2i2 interface for a good while - but perhaps it wouldn't hurt to still have the option if a few years down the road I change my mind and get different hardware...

I presume either the UD3 or UD5 are pretty similar in their setup? - I see some people have had success with each board, and I don't mind spending an extra 50 bucks to keep my options open.

Alright, I've updated my component list once again. I think I'm going to go the Hero route for the mobo :)

I have some more questions about monitors and the case.

If you want to go with a 27" 4K monitor the current LG model (not the one for MBP use) is a very good option.

If that eats up too much of your budget get at least a 1440p monitor so that text will look sharp enough.

That LG is nice, but I'm a little concerned about scaling options in different programs. It seems you can configure the display to run at native resolution (which would result in very tiny text and small desktop icons), but you can also change the scale so it appears bigger, easier for reading or web surfing. What about different programs? I saw that some people have a bad experience with programs like Adobe premiere or photoshop where the menu and tools are very tiny. I'm just a little concerned that I may experience similar issues with the software I'll be mainly using my hackintosh for (Logic Pro X).

The buyers guide lists a really nice Asus QHD monitor:

I think a 1440p monitor would be sharp enough and still offer good screen real estate. Does anyone have any pros or cons for either choice, 1440p or 4k?

I've the Noctua NH-D15 giant CPU air cooler. Real quiet. And a R5 case. Recording acoustic guitar about 2 meters from my Hack is no problem at all.

I'm also going with the Define R5 case. Is yours the window or windowless version? I've opted to go with a corsair H60 water cooler, and I would like to get a window version of the R5 case but I'm a little worried about noise with the window version, as I imagine it will not be nearly as quiet as the windowless case. I don't /need/ to be able to see inside the case, but I think it would look nice in my studio if I can get away with it :)

I have a Dell 1440p 27-inch. For DAW use 2160p on a 43-inch screen would be much better. I need more vertical space for the mixer below the arrange window, and 2160p/4k at 100% on a 27-inch is too small.

Saving up for a bigger screen and a new GPU. But the Dell has served me well for 5 years.

I have the windowless version. The case looks like a boring matt black box. I personally don't like computers with windows/colored LEDs/stickers and all that crap. No idea if the window makes the R5 case less quiet.

Has anyone had a problem with running High Sierra and the latest Screenflow on a Hackintosh? I see on the Screenflow site they say they don't support Hackintosh's or Nvidia Web Drivers.

But Im pretty sure Screenflow isn't going to know that its a Hackintosh. Surely its just going to look like Mac OS to it?

If it works on a Mac it will also work on a Hackintosh. They just won't help if you have any issues related to your hack.

ScreenFlow requires a GPU officially supported by Apple
Intel HD4000 is officially supported. So that can probably do a decent job .
If you do a lot of editing just get an RX560 card (non-xfx brand) and it will work.

ScreenFlow does not support NVIDIA "Web Drivers"
This statement is likely due to all the problems with Nvidia drivers in the past. It may still work they just don't want the responsibility when things don't work. An AMD card would probably be a better choice anyway.

+that about AMD cards, over the last year and a half I’ve seen die hard Nvidia users switching over due to frustration with the web drivers and updates. If you want a working mule get an AMD card, if you want a racehorse get the Nvidia and cross your fingers and pay attention, things move fast and keeping it operational can be an effort.
