Hi! I'm new to the hackintosh community and i'm looking forward for my first build. However i'm confused as to what exactly are the compatible graphics cards for a hackintosh. On the Buyer's guide in this website, only Gigabyte and EVGA brands of NVIDIA's 10 series cards are recommended. I was wondering if other brands are still compatible with a hackintosh (e.g. ASUS, PALIT, MSI, etc.)

Gigabyte and EVGA have the best compatibility because they very rarely deviate from the Nvidia "Reference Design" (best determined by the port layout). While other brands will/may work, we've found the brands/model # produce the most successful results with macOS and the Nvidia drivers. BTW, Apple always used a Reference Design graphics card from the AMD and Nvidia graphics card manufacturers.

See also the User and Golden Builds forum sections as well as Sierra Desktop Guides and Graphics forum sections for more information.

It depends is the only answer. What's the best car for you depends on lots of factors, e.g. cost, carrying capacity, speed, acceleration, fuel economy. Graphic cards are the same.

AMD cards are very good for FCPX as FCPX is optimised for AMD and the cards are fast. They also tend to work out of the box, at least for the 280X range (lets ignore XFX cards). nVidia cards are getting better but at the moment if you wanted a dedicated FCPX machine, AMD cards are probably the best option but the difference is now slight over a few years ago.

However nVidia cards tend to need drivers whenever a new OS X build comes out, some people don't like having to do the drivers update. Also if you use other software, nVidia might be a better choice and you take a performance hit on FCPX. This performance hit might be negligible or a lot depending on your workflow.

You need to look at what you need, most people don't need the very last % of power from FCPX and so an nVidia card may be best, some people like the ease of use of the AMD cards and the fact you can run multiple AMD cards easily.

You need to read and work out what you want to do, its never as simple as what's the best. Whats the best car, an Audi A6 or a Mercedes C-Class?

Except for the AMD RX 460, which works OOB according to its users, the 400 and newer 500 series AMD cards require a kext modification. This mod has to be done after each macOS update.

While you have to wait for Nvidia to release an update after a macOS update, the update is usually comes out within 24-48 hours of the macOS update release. Once out, the update is painless as it posted in the Graphics forum section and the Downloads > NVIDIA (see top of this page, Downloads menu).

So, if it was me and I wanted ease of use, I go with a Nvidia graphics card. However, since I don't use FCPX, I recommend you read some of the reports by users of the AMD RX 400/500 cards.
