The Build

The purpose of this machine is to build confidence in making a Hackintosh without having to invest a lot of money into it. Now that it is functioning it will replace my Mac Mini as the iTunes server. It's a rather ceremonial position for a machine that I have a lot of nostalgia for. I was also surprised to find that even with the old graphics cards it was quite capable of Diablo 3 at high settings 1440P.

I picked this machine based on having almost all of the parts on hand already and only needed a few things including the motherboard, hard drive and case.

I picked the motherboard because unlike my ASUS P5N-D the ASUS P5Q-E require very little to get macOS working.

Installation

BIOS Settings

Unless advanced in the ways of the Hackintosh, I strongly suggest restoring to factory defaults before adjusting the settings to match. Then after making the changes in your BIOS settings go to the BOOT section of the BIOS and ensure the computer will boot to the desired drive.

The same BIOS settings dbestal used in his build for El Capitan.

configure SATA as-AHCI
Max CPUID VALUE Limit- DISABLE
CPU Tm FUNCTION- DISABLE

Suspend Mode [S3]
repost Video on S3 [yes]
ACPI 2. Support [enabled]
ACPI Support [Enabled]

Steps:

Install using USB- Boot USB and flag the Ff
1. On my iMac I created a Sierra boot disk following the guide steps 1 and 2.
2. DSDT fix mask tick all aug[-v -Dart=0 kext-devmode=1 ]/Kernel support CPU
3. Disk utilities and format hard drive with partition GUID install 17Min
4. Reboot with USB and select the installed Sierra Partition
5. boot again to USB installer and select the partition Sierra install Multibeast 8.1 (legacy)
6. use clover configurator and tick ACPI except Fix LAN for Ethernet build
7. Reboot. removed USB
8. boot up and once clover comes up go to options -> graphics injectors and select injectNvidia
9. return to the root of clover and boot from Sierra Partition
10. downloaded IONetworkingFamily.kext and Marvell88E8056.kext from transfers to my computer with a thumbstick.http://www.tonymacx86.com/el-capita...2-no-sound-el-captain-p5q-e-mother-board.html
11. installed the above kext files using wizard
12. reboot and plugged in my headphones
(NOTE: I have no WIFI on my machine currently so I used a direct Ethernet connection at this point.)
13. Signed into my Apple account, went into the App Store and updated Sierra to latest version and rebooted when prompted.

Once the machine booted back up everything was working.

Many thanks to dbestal and his thread which I followed heavily. This result would not have been possible without building upon his work.

Update 1

I successfully installed macOS 10.12.4 via the App Store to this machine. I have updated the first screen shot in this post to reflect this change.

Update 2

I installed a USB3 to USB2 adapter to connect the cable for the case USB3 ports to connect to a internal port on the P5Q-E motherboard.

This is what the adapter looks like.

Here it is installed in the machine. It's very difficult to actually see it though. :D If you look directly under the Ge in GeForce you'll see a blue internal USB2.0 connector that supports two USB 2.0 ports and in it the little bit of the cable that is coming out from the opening in the sleeve hiding the power supply and cables.

In continuing to put the system through it's paces I have confirmed that:
  1. I can sign into my iTunes account and play movie and TV content that I have purchased on my account.
  2. I can sign into the App Store and download and update software.
  3. Diablo 3 plays in high settings at 1440P at ~30-50FPS.
  4. YouTube plays back videos. I have confirmed up to the 1440P resolution I am running at.
  5. Sleep works from both timing out doing nothing and selecting sleep after clicking the Apple icon in the menu bar.
  6. Screen sharing
Things that are not working:
  1. Apple Maps can't locate my location even though in System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Location Services I have enable location services and Maps checked.
  2. Temperature Gauge is not detecting the temperature readings of any of the sensors in the machine. Fixed with MultiBeast.
  3. Screen recording with several App Store programs that work on my iMac don't work on this machine.

I have just ordere some upgraded memory for this machine. I was able to get a 8GB kit (4x2GB) of HyperX DDR2-1066 which is a step up from the DDR2-800 that my machine is currently using. When the kit arrives I'll update my performance scores and try to get some recordings of the machine in operation.

I have run into a hiccup with screen recordings not working that will require troubleshooting when I get home.

Hi, I got same board with Intel Xeon e5450 on it and I'm trying to install Sierra using your tutorial. And also for mention I'm total noob in this. So please can you help me understand what I need to do it right? First I don't understand what does this mean "2. DSDT fix mask tick all aug[-v -Dart=0 kext-devmode=1 ]/Kernel support CPU"??? And I'm using old ATI 5750 so I need make something different then you because you got Nvidia?
Thanks for ansvers and help.

Please bare with me because this is my first Hackintosh too so I am also new to it.

I'm not sure exactly how the actual Xeon would have to be setup but I guess it would be the same.

I have no idea about the ATI. I'm guessing in Clover you could set it to inject ATI instead of nVidia to make it work. You'll want to put that in your plist on the EFI of your drive so it always does the injection.

The step you are referring to is in clover setting up the boot flags. I used the step because the tutorial I was working with (linked in my first post) used them.

Hi, thanks for all the infos that you gave to us :) I have 2 problems:
1)When I select Shutdown, it reboot instead of turn off.
2) Sleep doesn't work.
We have quite the same configuration, mine is a P5Q Deluxe with a Q9550, Nvidia 770.
What I have to do?

You're welcome.

I'm not having this issue on mine. It shuts down, sleeps and turns on. I'm not very experienced with Hackintoshes but could there are additional options in your BIOS that need to be adjusted?

Hi guys.

I followed the tutorial but the error appears: mac version not yet set.
I did the procedure with the saw 10.11.6

When I boot from UniBeast and follow your instructions, I click Install OSX Sierra from external, and it doesn't go past the Apple Logo. When you created your UniBeast USB did you select UEFI or Legacy? Not sure what I'm doing wrong, any suggestions?

Same here... Can’t past Apple logo and progress bar without any progress. Just stuck there. When I boot with -v it stuck at FakeSMC.

Also, in clover, my mouse is working but keyboard doesn’t.

I am trying to install High Sierra.

Somebody got any tip?
