Core I5-3470 Dell Optiplex 7010 8GB/1TB $330 at Newegg

Costco have $100 off a newer Dell tower with a i5-6400 (it's now $499). Although this is more expensive than the deals above, I like the Costco return policy and it's not a refurb etc. Would this be as easy to turn into a Hackintosh as the older Optiplex?

i5 vs i7 is a big downgrade for more money?

Well, the extra price is for piece of mind I guess. I felt that the 200 I paid was worth the risk. I have seen a working pull from an office environment last quite a few years. I liked not having to buy a graphics card. If that piece of mind is worth it and the return policy is good, go for it. At 500 bucks, you can almost build you one as good or better. I knew I couldn't build this thing for what I got it for. If I was dude I would hit auctions or craigslist or ebay and look for a steal. I don't see the processor downgrade as much as I see the piece of mind investment. If it gets broke you have someone to complain to. In my case I had to hope the seller would work with me.

Arkie, did you have any trouble with the sierra install? was it step by step as per the guide? just follow the directions?

Thanks
William

Thanks to everyone that helped me with everything. I have all of the updates and everything that I need working. I got my USB audio device in today and it works great. If you have questions of me catch me on ****** as doc_brietz

The first issue I had is that it wouldn't complete the first half of the install. I noticed the board and model number (which was Mac Pro 3,1 in the el cap install by default) was 5,2. Now, I am not sure if this exactly did the trick, but once I changed both of those to "iMac 13,2" and clicked "USB Ownership" under PCI Settings in clover, it booted right up. For the second half of the install I did those same things again and everything worked. I got to the multicast part and kinda winged it. I don't think audio will work in Sierra but I know it will in El Cap following the Apple ALC guide over at /r/hackintosh on ******. You also have to inject Intel video in Sierra but not in El Cap. Do yourself a favor and order that USB Audio adapter listed somewhere else in this thread.

The El Cap install went much smoother. Token Screenshot included.

Arkie, much appreciated. lemme try those setting right now.
I have an i5 3570 but i get a kernel panic father the apple logo with loading bar..

I'm not worried about audio but i;m wondering if its the i7 with HD 4000 vs my i5 with HD 2500 graphics.

HD2500 is not supported and HD4000 is. For Sierra you would need at least a GT710 for graphics to work smoothly. If you are going to install El Capitan the GT610 is the lowest cost solution for graphics. Use the DVI or HDMI output to your monitor.

Thank you TRS, I ordered an evga gt710.

Use the flag in clover "fix USB Ownership"

This will fix the issue.

I am not sure those HD 2500 graphics are even compatible with sierra. Consider getting a GTX 710 low profile graphics card.
