GREAT INSTRUCTIONS!! Thanks Stork! First Hackintosh, got all working first time ... then I wanted to change the skin for the clover bootloader and messed it up completely... started all over again, working again!! Advise to all: ALWAYS MAKE A COPY OF YOUR CONFIG.PLISTackintosh Trim enable or not BEFORE MESSING WITH ANYTHING !! Next thing I wanna do, is maybe clone my Sierra System to my Samsung NVMe m.2. Got that working to with Rehab Mans Patch:) I am so happy to be back on a Mac after 1 year of Win 10 on my Desktop!

a couple of benchmarks... Mac vs windows.... OS x is a bit faster on the same machine,
OSx 10 12.3 (Samsung 850pro ssd) vs Win 10 (win 10 was even on a faster disk (NVMe 950 pro 512gb). Interesting results..

Hey Stork!

Very Helpful Build, it helped me with my first hackintosh. I have installed Mac using TonyMac's guide and have followed RehabMan's guide for my NVME SSD(I don't have a windows installation so I tried your root for your NVME SSD on your GENE) but I can't seem to boot from this SSD, as when I boot from the SSD I get the "Do Not" symbol. The NVMe SSD I am using is the Corsair Force MP500. Another problem that I am having is that VRAM doesn't work; the fix to BIOS 3007 on the NVIDIA graphics troubleshooting guide doesn't change anything. My resolution is 800p, on a 4k monitor I am using with DP 1.2. I am also using your conflig.plist. Any insight into these problems?

Many thanks for the excellent guide, I sourced the same hardware as listed in this build (minus NMVE HDD) and I'm now a proud owner of my first hackintosh.

Can I ask a couple of questions to help finalise the build:

  1. Does the Maximus VIII Gene require a DSDT? I saw no mention of it in this build, so assume it just works OOB.
  2. Do I require SSDT for USB 3.0? The system profile report states USB speeds up to 12mb/s - which I believe is USB 2.0, not 3.0 speeds. If anyone knows of a good way to test USB 3.0 it would be greatly appreciated. NOTE, 3rd party USB 3 was checked during Multibeast post install.

Thanks again for a fantastic and thoroughly detailed guide. I'll be sure to post my build in the next few weeks when I have some spare time.

1. I do not have a DSDT file for my Gene and have not run in to any problems.
2. You should NOT install 3rd party USB 3. You can remove it by going to /Library/Extensions and deleting GenericUSBXHCI.kext. ssdt-usb.aml is recommended but many users have systems that work fine without it. If you do decide that you want to use ssdt-usb.aml, you can find the Gene specific files here.

1. No. DSDTs haven't been needed since the 5 series motherboards for most systems.

2. I am not using a SSDT for USB as haven't 'gotten around to it.' My USB ports work well enough. However, pastrychef did a great job in explaining how he created his SSDT-usb.aml. So, I recommend that, if you want to "refine" your build, you should look to his example. But, get your system up and running successfully first! Then, fine tune it.

Pastrychef & Stork, thanks for the prompt replies. Makes perfect sense, I will follow your advice.

I've been on the fence for the last few months deciding to go "Hackintosh", after reading both your build posts it gave me the confidence to commit. I'm so happy I did, it runs flawlessly and puts my 2015 Retina MacBook Pro to shame - and all for a little over £1,000. Super happy!

I'll be sure to mention your guides when I post my build on here soon.

@pastrychef, in your #1 post for your Maximus Gene build you mention to include the 3rd Party USB when running MultiBeast.
