Want to start a build with a macbook pro hard drive that currently has, i believe, lion OSX on it. Can i build a system and use the existing hard drive as to save all files and programs?

Yes you can. You will need to install FakeSMC.kext and a boot loader to get it to boot on PC hardware. Then, whatever the chipsets are on the mainboard, you will need drivers for networking and audio.

Be very careful when choosing your hardware - Apple stopped updating Lion for new hardware after Mountain Lion came out, so look for Ivy Bridge or earlier hardware.

Ok, just read that my current motherboard has been used in a build. Would I be able to use it and the existing HDD from the mac book together? New to all this, and really want to get that mac back running without buying a whole new one.

Cannot say - my crystal ball is broken and I cannot see your hardware.
Maybe it will occur to you to read the Rules and enter your hardware in your profile one of these days, yes?
