First off, thank you to everyone on the G5 thread and everyone who contributes to the tonymacx86 website. This is a different kind of G5 mod build log, not only am I going to show you the modding process, I am also going to show you my set up and explain everything as I go along. There is a common misconception on youtube and interwebs that you can't mod PCs without power tools or a huge assortment. I can honestly say, all the mods I have completed is with a 29 dollar dremel, screw gun, sandpaper, apoxy and paint. So my point is, anyone can mod if you have patience and research for creative ideas. In order to have a beautiful pc, you gots to have a great setup imo. The purpose of this mod is entertainment and 4k gaming. I upgraded from 1080p to 4k for the release of skyrim se, as I am a mod creator. unfortunately this build does not run OSX at the moment, because of my new GPU's. I am not going to continue to ramble, so lets get started shall we. I am going to list everything w/links for people interested in these parts and ideas for their own setups. Enjoy!

Picture Time and Randomness!!

All the Fun Stuff! Birthday Presents!

This is the prepping period. I had to take apart every watercooling part and clean them thoroughly to avoid clogging and discoloration of the fluid.

I taped off around the cd slot and splatted on some epoxy with a puddy knife. It was a lot easier this time around because I had to basically create the mesh last time around. The epoxy this time had a solid base to adhere to. For anyone interested I taped the outer shell of the case because putting it back on is super annoying and a long process. Also, you risk scratching the top and bottom when reassembling. I also want to point out, please if you use JB weld, add even amounts of steel and hardener and mix it thoroughly to get the best results.

Just some touch up on the back stripe to flatten it up.

After an hour of hand sanding to make a flat surface.

I cut out 2 pieces of mesh from a part G5 I had lying around. The purpose was to press them both together with screws to ensure the holes line up and so I don't smash my dremel through the epoxy. Warning don't wear sandals when using tools kids.

This is the finished results. My brilliant idea worked, all the holes line up and with a little bit of sanding shes ready for a paint job.

Let the Painting begin! I repainted all the fittings, Panels, and other random parts that were chipping

This is the circles for the fans painted silver along with a heatsink from my motherboard. O and I forgot the SLI bridge. I used Plastidip for the silver and I don't really like it. I don't know if I coated it enough or not, but it peels super easy.

The only picture I have of the rebuilding process. I don't know if you can make it out, I used adhesive foam as grommets that the sleeved wires enter. I placed the foam over the backside of the panel then cut slits with a razor blade to feed the cables through. Give it a clean look imo

Finished mod and Setup

I don't know why my fluid looks purple with this camera. If you look I mounted my ssd against the wall on top of my 240mm rad. I added the asus sticker for some flair.

Setup and other modifications

My lighting kit wire management & nickel backplates

I forgot to take a picture of it, the logitech master mouse was modding black from the ugly gold.

Met Jeff Gordon the Storm Trooper, no relation to the NASCAR driver. That's also my custom character for skyrim if anyone was wondering.

Ikea footstool with custom Mickey mouse cushion top, and yes my guitar matches my setup.

The Kanto YU2 speakers with my cactus Prickly Pete powered by corsair.

Fiio E10k DAC mounted in the ikea Mikael thingy.

Beyerdynamic DT 990 on the Anchor

Wanted to show the real color of the lights because the LEDs are showing up purple with the camera. These are a couple pictures taken with my iphone. I put a blue camera film filter on the front LED to match the theme of the setup

Again I am impressed with this system. Very nice craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Good modding,

i love it!!! :D hows the temp with the 3 rads? and i'm thinking of using the DDC pump because of height/space issue with the D5. but I like how the D5 performs. hows the DDC pump?

everything is well executed. very nice cabling. sexy bends :) the sli 1070 <3 im thinking of getting a 1080 coz I might give my 980ti to my brother.

can you show me how you attached your front 240rad? coz that one really gives more space.

My swifttech pump is PWM but I have it set to manual in the bios to run at half speed. Half speed is about 2000-2300 rpm. The pump is an alternative to the louder but more powerful d5 you have. Don't be mistaken by its size, it thrashes anything ive thrown at it. The temps vary by my room temperature. I would say idle, my gpu temps are between 22c to 25c and my cpu around 25 to 28c. On games, it depends on the game, skyrim is very cpu intensive and I see high 50s but gpus stay at high 30s. The rad in the front has been trial and error for quite sometime. I settled on 3m extreme strong double stick tape. I lined the entire back with cut out pieces stuck it on, pretty easy. As far as the 1080, you have waited this long, go with the 1080ti when it comes out.

so you only have fans at the back of the radiator? how did you put the double sided tape? on the side of the radiator?
i am puzzled how i will put my xtx240 rad at the front without eating so much space.

wow i have that tape maybe i can use it.

So, if I understand correctly, the drive door removal is basically a big painted piece of epoxy ?

What a beauty! Thank you for sharing :)

Great build, and thank you for sharing this one.

I have a few questions that I would like more clarification on if you have a moment.

  1. How was the back panel modified to have no fans? Did I miss that in this thread? Is it a different piece added?
  2. The CD slot was modified with JB weld I understand. Was it truly as simple as putting a piece of duct tape on the inside of the case (so sticky side of tape faces outwards) and then mudding on the JB Weld with a putty knife (like mudding a hole in a wall)?
  3. I am assuming that the original PowerMac PSU housing has a cannibalized ATX PSU inside of it? Any pics?
Thank you.
