If you read the FAQ, you will see why it matters.

I can temporarily remove my discrete gpu if you think that is what my problem is.

Your Nvidia GPU is not a problem if you follow the guide.

What would I need to learn to fully understand how this all works? I would like to eventually understand it, rather than simply follow a guide.

I'm finally beginning to understand how this all works and what's involved. A little more complicated than I initially realized. I'm almost there. I just need to find a little more time away from work...

Ok, so I can't say I've read everything, but I have read quite a bit and I think I'm ready to have another go at this when I get home.
However, I am still not sure which OS will have less difficulties. I want one of the three newest ones, so it's between Yosemite (10.10), El Capitan (10.11), and Sierra(10.12). I'm favoring MacOS Sierra, but want to make sure all of the same patching methods and such will apply before going for it. I realize the NVIDIA GPU is done differently, and that I won't be able to get the 870m working at all, which is really too bad, but I can live with it.

So, which OS should I go with for my first hackintosh?

Well, I finally got through it all and made my installation USB with RehabMans guide. I decided to go with OS X El Capitan since it's been out longer and seems to have more documentation.

The problem I'm having now, is that I'm getting the garbled screen and cannot figure out how to combat it. Also, when I boot with -v I also get "Firewire GUID 00000000000 is invalid!" many many times. I feel like the two problems are related based on how much searching I've done on this, but I'm not knowledgable enough to figure it out.

I've been questioning whether or not this is worth it for days now and though this is awesome in theory, it's just not working out for me. It's just about time to put this hackintosh attempt to rest.
