I have a 6 year old computer and in possession of an assortment of parts ranging from video cards, hard drives, cables, internal cd, dvds, and all kinds.

Has anyone in the community built a Hackintosh successfully from a Gateway FX 6801-09H? If possible, I'd like to share notes in this thread for documentation purposes and for people to chime in with possible suggestions.

Thanks for your time.

To find out what I was working with, I downloaded the following program:
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

Well, while I was waiting for a reply I followed the install guide at:
http://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/u...apitan-on-any-supported-intel-based-pc.172672

HOW LONG IT TAKES TO CREATE A BOOTABLE USB
Creating the bootable USB with UniBeast actually took almost 45 minutes. I'm guessing it's because my computer is older than dirt compared to what others may be using.

For the BIOS, I took the advice and set it default optimized settings. FYI: This made a big difference. I don't know how, but it did because it allowed me to actually install OSX.

I'm not familiar with any of this and Clover tripped me up a bit. One thing I did was I would press the space bar based on what I had selected to get into the options menu. I had to add the dv_disable=1 in order to get pass the Clover menu to do the install. After, things went pretty smooth.

Today, I got as far as being able to display the Finder. It's stretched out but I don't care. It installed! Next is to work with the GEFORCE GTS 450 card drivers. I will be looking at the following link:
http://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/solving-nvidia-driver-install-loading-problems.161256/
http://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/n...cs-drivers-for-os-x-10-11-6-346-03-15.198033/

As it stands, it is possible to install El Capitan OSX on a Gateway FX 6801 and have it display in default mode.

Running MultiBeast El Capitan 8.2.3 at the end after the OS X install required I chose:
1. Legacy Boot Mode
1. ALC1150 for audio
2. Select Inject NVIDIA (FYI - it didn't work for me but was able to get to the default display by adding a nv_disable=1 in the boot options).

It seemed simply following the installation procedure at http://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/u...pitan-on-any-supported-intel-based-pc.172672/ with the exception of the video card. It didn't recognize the GEFORCE GTS 450. I would imagine installing the NVIDIA Web Drivers should take care of that.

*Settings are kept in a file called config.plist located at EFI > EFI > CLOVER > config.plist
In order to get to the EFI partition, we need to use an app called EFI mounter. Download is available at http://www.tonymacx86.com/resources/efi-mounter-v3.280/

NVIDIA VIDEO CARD
Regarding the NVIDIA video cards, installing CUDA and the NVIDIA web drivers allowed me to successfully make sure of dual monitors.

NVIDIA web drivers are available at:
http://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/n...cs-drivers-for-os-x-10-11-6-346-03-15.198033/

Take note that the driver must match the current operating system. Otherwise it will not install.
*Something a bit voodoo'ish. I notice sometimes when I restart my NVIDIA drivers are not recognized or the computer will restart. The only way to get back to the Finder is by disabling the drivers via nv_disable=1. I then would change the video to either the Apple default or the NVIDIA drivers. I also had to physically disconnect any USB device attached.

USB HEADPHONES AND STEREO AUDIO
USB headphones worked out of the box. However, the analog audio plugs did not. Looking into it a bit more it seemed like a lot of work to make it work. I found an alternative for $10. I picked up USB stereo audio adapter. Heh...it worked out of the box.

Next up is adding USB hard drives. I noticed it would mess up my video and I don't know why.

USB DRIVES DISCONNECTS AFTER SLEEPING
PROBLEM: Current issue I am trying to solve. On start-up it will see the drives. However, when the computer goes into sleep mode, any USB device attached will go offline.

...will update when I find the answer...if you have any suggestion please chime in. For now, doing a search and try stuff out.

Possible solutions to this USB issue, I will try these out:

http://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/poll-usb-issues-after-sleep-wake-yosemite.145894/

None of the above worked for me, however it may work for you.

USB SOLUTION (This is what worked for me) - SafeSleep Script
This was a great script. It worked out of the box. Remarkable.

SIDE NOTE - USB Ethernet Network Adapter
My Gateway FX 6801 Hackintosh has been running well and so far haven't seen any major glitches. I will continue to post whatever else I find so that someone out there might find the info helpful.

On another note, I got a hold of a computer older than the 6 year old Gateway FX 6801. This one is a beat up HP Pavillion dating back from 2008! I got El Capitan to install on it and I installed an NVIDIA card found in a junk box. Anyway it appeared the built in RealTek Ethernet no longer worked. It was malfunctioning as it would connect then take my entire network down. I would imagine it's the switches or some thing at which point, I didn't want to waste anymore time troubleshooting. What to do? I found that hooking up a TP-LINK UE300 USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Network Adapter worked out of the box. Granted the bottleneck is the USB 2.0 port of the computer, it worked well. I got it for about $20 brand new, discounted $10.

...another side note, I even got multi-monitor support. I picked up two LCDs running 1280x1024 for $10 from a nearby thrift store. So far, total cost has been my time and $40 spent to get it working.

The big test now is to see what I can make with this thing. Stay tuned...sip...

*I will start posting specs on this stuff at some point so you guys can see what I've had to work with.

USB Apple Keyboard A1048
On my Gateway FX 6801, it will not register when the computer goes to sleep. The mouse (old Microsoft wheel mouse optical) works fine.

I then used a Logitech USB keyboard (Internet Navigator Keyboard circa 2003) and it registered and I don't know why.

HIBERNATION / AWAKE FROM SLEEP ISSUE
An issue that happened is when the computer goes to sleep, it wakes up but there is no display on the monitor. I can hear the drives spinning and the fan is on, but no display.

Some info I've found that sounds exactly like what's been happening:
https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/skylake-hd530-sleeps-but-wont-wake.190929/page-7

"After wake the machine, the monitor will not have siginal and go back to power save mode. At this time, press the power button to make the machine going to sleep. One second after press the power button, click the keyboard to interrupt the sleep process, now the monitor will have siginal."

HOW TO TURN OFF SYSTEM HIBERNATION / SLEEP
Something I am trying out atm (Updated as of Oct5-16)
https://www.macissues.com/2015/05/08/how-to-fix-your-mac-not-waking-from-sleep/

Launch terminal and run the following:

$ sudo pmset standby 0
$ sudo pmset autopoweroff 0

HIBNERNATE / WAKE FROM SLEEP CONCLUSION
After hours on this, it appears the only current solution (as of Oct8-16) is to set the computer to never sleep and manually set sleep via the menu system. This has been consistent for the past couple of days. This is obviously not optimal as it requires manual intervention, but it is the current workaround.

PHOTO OF THE HP PAVILLION
This computer is over 8 years old and I was able to get El Capitan running on it. It was not fast by any means but it felt kind of neat to install.

I still need to put the face back on. But I think it's broken because it doesn't snap back. I did notice it had some "glue" which is not typical for these kinds of cases. It should just snapped. The first guy that took it off probably broke it...ha ha ha ... oh well.

HACKINGTOSH IS RUNNING SOMEWHAT RELIABLY AND I'M STARTING TO MAKE STUFF
I installed Inkscape on my Hackintosh and started to learn it. I'd like to one day see if I can create a complete game using open source apps. For example, Inkscape, Gimp, and Blender3D. As for a game SDK, I'm looking into it. Maybe start with a simple 2D game or something...I dunno, I'm making this up as I go along...sip...

Here's a link I found about people's success using a Hackintosh to develop iOS apps. I guess there really is not much of a difference. It's just a processor right? Aight, here's the link:
