GA-H61M-DS2 Boot from HDD problems

Install Clover Legacy mode on your Sandy Bridge hardware and you should be able to boot from the HDD.

Thanks again for the advice. Sorry to say but I'm still struggling to get this working. I've tried all sorts but nothing appears to work. I installed Clover Legacy downloaded here https://www.tonymacx86.com/resources/el-capitan-post-install-tools.294/ but the system will not boot from Clover with any options, seems to be stuck in a reboot cycle now. The only way I can get the system to boot is with the aid of my Unibeast created USB but then I have many issues including SoundAssertion in AppleHDA, Missing Bluetooth Controller Transport etc etc. The system does eventually boot but the keyboard and mouse take an eternity to start working. Once I'm in everything appears fairly responsive but jumping through hoops to get the the desktop is wearing me down.

Should I perhaps create a new bootable USB using Clover/M-Lion and start from scratch? Using this method with El Capitan was the only way so far I've managed to create a system that would boot from the HDD.

So do not use Clover to boot SL - use Chimera. Chimera (branch of Chameleon) has worked well for years on all hardware and versions of OS X up to Yosemite. It was only El Capitan and later that required Clover.

Thanks GB for putting up with my newness. So what you're saying is basically stick to following the standard guide for installing Mountain Lion? I think maybe I should have started a new thread in the appropriate forum but this is kind of a natural evolution. I was only trying clover after your suggestion as all I'm struggling with is getting my system to boot from its own HDD. Using boot loaders from I've managed repeatably install SL/MTN and ELCAP and boot using the USB loader.

I will continue my quest which is currently to install 10.8.5 on my system and have it boot from the HDD. FYI I'm typing this reply from my 10.8.5 system which is running beautifully with the exception of my boot issues.

Thanks for all your time responding to date, keep up the great work!

What brand/model drive is your boot drive? If SSD, how old is it? Some early model SSDs had to have a firmware update to be able to load UEFI booting OS X.

Hi GB,

I just though I'd let you know I have my system fully operational with the exception of sound, bluetooth and a few minor things of no consequence. Thank you for all of your help and patience.

I achieved this with the standard Chimera install from the Guides in the end. I think I was just being a newbie with a few options so I went back to square one and started from the beginning documenting each step and option along the way.

It ended up being pretty much an OOB install just using UserDSDT or DSDT free installation and then adding Network drivers post installation. I also manged to update everything post install using Software Update and setup Time Machine. I've installed all of my software and everything is running pretty snappy. I will attempt to get sound and other stuff running at some point but they are really non essential at this point in time.

Additionally I'm going to make an image of the HDD for paranoia's sake before tinkering anymore but could you tell me is it possible to fix something if I install an incorrect kext and the system fails to boot. i.e. would it be possible to boot into safe mode and remove any kexts that were installed incorrectly?

Thanks again for all your help!

Best is to take a spare drive and clone your working drive. Then you experiment on the Clone, keeping careful notes of what worked and what did not. When satisfied it works the way you want, only then do you do the operation to the working drive.
Once working drive has the upgrade/update/fix, clone it again for a bootable safety backup

That's great advice and I'm already on it!

I've posted in the Buyers Guide forum here with some ideas for hardware I will actually purchase (well something like this) what do you think?
