Hello, I don't know if someone might be able to help me, but here it goes... I have 4540s i3 running 10.8.5 that has been running very nicely with very little issues for almost a year now. I installed with this guide -> https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/guide-to-installing-mountain-lion-on-hp-probook.77057/ and I haven't had any issues till now. I use the computer to make music using various different programs and hardware. I have always recorded with just the onboard line in/mic input on the front of the laptop at 48000Hz/16bit. Has been solid with no issues until recently. The audio sounds fine for a while then gets corrupted with what sounds kind of like static build up(tested various wires/sources digital and analog with the same result). I recorded it and will link a post for what it sounds like as I'm not sure I could post a .wav file here. One thing I noticed is that the audio setup is always a random way when the computer starts and I have to change it every time I start the laptop. Its weird because the built in mic and line in input and the built in output are different. The line input is always at 44100Hz/24bit and the output is 44100Hz/16bit, and the mic in is at 48000Hz/16bit. I'm pretty sure somethings not right because of this, especially with the change in bit depth on the in and out. Please, if there is a way to maybe fix this that somebody knows please let me know. Even a reset to get the Hz/bits the same(as it seems that simply changing these before opening apps doesn't work) would probably help, but I don't know what to do. I really really really don't want do a fresh install because I seriously don't want to go through all the installs for everything again. It all works great except for this one issue crippling me. Thanks for your time.

Only the new guide is supported (at least by me):

Ok, I have to use ML because I have 2 apps that don't work properly together after that. I had Mavericks for a while and spent more time trying to fix issues than being able to use my hardware. That is the reason I use it along with that guide. But this really doesn't have anything to do with the initial install. As it has been running stable for a while now. Just recently it seems the audio has been compromised. It seems fine doing everything but recording. And external usb sound cards act the same way as the on board which makes me think the core audio is corrupted. I have found many people with the same problem, however, it seems mainly that it was in Mavericks. I will continue to try to play with it. Is there a way to refresh core audio or reinstall it without a fresh install? Thanks.

The guide supports ML.
Hmm. Okay. I guess if I can't get this sorted any other way I will reinstall everything. Do you think a full reinstall using that guide will solve the issue? Because if not there will be a lot of time wasted. Especially because I have parrellels installed with software on there. I'm going to try a few more things like killing core audio and editing/deleting .plist files when I get home. There's got to be a reason this is happening, and a way to fix it, without spending hours reinstalling everything. Thanks for your input, I truly appriciate the help.

The guide does not require a full re-install. Of course the success depends on how much garbage you have on your system.

I cannot predict the future.

Because if not there will be a lot of time wasted.

Always have a backup and know how to restore it.

By garbage do you mean things like installed software and the folders and files they create?

And I don't know if its truely fixed, but i just recorded a full album and it went fine all the way through. The only thing i did was I ran this in the terminal.

sudo killall coreaudiod

and restarted the computer. which I did about a thousand times during this. I should mention, too, I changed all the bit rates/Hz to the same right before I restarted the computer with no apps running. And the the next restart they came up the same, the way they are supposed to. This seems like it had to have been related to a program more than the os. and maybe this reset something. I'm not sure.
Hope its good will update and confirm stability. Thanks for your dedication RehabMan.

Extra software that is not really needed that might interfere or incorrectly done hackintosh things.

Software such as (SoundFlower) causes Audio to not work properly Skype even causes the problem and Chrome is known to cause issues with Audio due to Flash that is implemented inside Chrome.

thanks. I had actually had and issue with soundflower on mavericks but never mountain lion. It is time for me to get with the times and update to a newer os. Will do soon.
