I have plugged my hackintosh into my router with an ethernet cable in an effort to connect to the internet. When I try to log onto the internet, I cannot. I have installed all of the kext files with Multibeast for SL. When I check the Network under system preferences, I have the Ethernet option to the far left which reads "Ethernet Self-Assigned IP" with a yellow circle by it. The status says "Connected: Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet." Looking below that the Configure IPv4 is set to Using DHCP, there is an IP Address value as well as a Subnet Mask value. The Router, DNS Server and Search Domains values are all empty.

I have tried a variety of adjustments, but nothing is opening up the connection. How should I proceed?

From what I could gather in your post you computer is actually connected to the router fine, (ie. the yellow circle means you have an IP address assigned - via DHCP in this case), its just your router is not serving up any internet.

Not sure if your talking about a router which is connected to a separate modem (cable or ADSL) or a combined router/modem (typically supplied by your ISP).

Either way, have you tried the obvious and restarted the modem/router? I've seen the same issue several times over the years, both on a real Mac and a Hackintosh. Restarting the router almost always fixes it in my experience, else it something simple like a loose/improperly connected ethernet cable.

Reasons for needing to restart your router might be that your ISP has pushed a firmware update to the modem - this can sometimes result in a lack of internet connection until the modem had been restarted.

Another possibility is that its overheated.

If all that fails then try checking all the cables if you haven't done so already, particularly the one bringing data INTO your modem/router.

Only other things I can think of are (barring an actual hardware fault with your router or computer) is phoning your ISP helpline to see if there are experiencing technical issues. Whilst your on the phone with them, (and I don't wish to sound rude -just trying to cover all possibilities!), maybe its also worth checking that your last ISP payment was received ok and they haven't cut you off!

Good luck! :)

Thanks for the ideas. I have tried restarting the modem. It is a Netgear ProSafe wireless access point. I use it to connect with my laptop via the wireless signal, so I know that it is working for that. I will test the cable connection and do another restart to see it that will help out. So, all in all it sounds like I don't need to make any kext changes or multibeast installations to get things up and running, but rather that it has to do with the access point. Is that right?

Shame you didn't list the model number of the NetGear ProSafe. Does this only have one port for a network cable on the back - ( or list the model number for us)

Who set it up for you ( your ISP)

As to the yellow icon in the "network" - see if you have an button called "assist me" this may get your connection working

Also - if you restarted your modem then you may want to restart your PC to see if it works. Apple tends to auto connect by itself.

In the netwrok section you should see at the top of the screen the Location : Set to Autimatic
the Configure IPv4 set to Using DHCP - their maybe an IP Subnet - Router - DNS server address.
in the fields provided some gray some not.
If this is so then it should be a Freen indicator and stay Connected.

Of course if you didn't select the correct network options for you mother board in Multibeast we are just spinning our wheels here - as that needs to be done first.

Also make sure you run System Utilities in MultiBeast as well....

Ok, good news, I got it working! I had to manually apply the IP for some reason. Thanks for all the help.
