Another G5 Case Mod, with some useful resources

Again sorry for the late replies, I don't visit this forum very often and life gets in the way. Regarding the acrylic back plate, it looks like someone is making money off of my design. The back plate is nowhere near as cool, but the acrylic motherboard mount looks to be identical...

Another G5 Case Mod, with some useful resources

Hi Chaos, sorry It took so long to get back to you. I have been on holidays over the Christmas period without internet (it's a lot more fun than it sounds :D) To correct the kext problem, you need to download another copy of AppleACPIPlatform.kext. There is a version here...

Thanks. I cut the plastic using my CNC machine, and then glued an LED in the appropriate spot to pick up the features in the plastic.

Ok, it's finished. The computer shop has finally returned my motherboard, it has been repaired. I installed it again, and made up the last of the cables. Pictures here:

Another G5 Case Mod, with some useful resources

Hi Kiwi, There is no reason why you couldn't use a transistor to do the interface for the sensing if you are designing for a particular motherboard. The reason I used a relay is that the Intel HD standard assumes a contact on the connector which is isolated from all other circuitry. The only...

The G5 case does not have an HDD led, so I decided to do my own fancy version:

Another G5 Case Mod, with some useful resources

I've finished the front panel, I blew all the components off the front panel PCB with an SMD rework tool and attached a USB and firewire lead that I got off of ebay to the pins on the connectors. Then I made up a small relay board to adapt the apple audio out to the standard intel HD audio...

I fitted the rear fans with a thermal controller as well. I ran out of standard power diodes so I used a couple of surface mount S1M power diodes, which seem to have a higher forward voltage.

This weekend I remade the motherboard tray as it was a touch too long and was lifting up where the case seam on the edges interfered with it. I eventually got it right and refitted it. I will post the updated DXF shortly. I bought some thermal fan control PCB's off of ebay to keep the apple...

Thanks for the support.:) @pointandclick I Bought it, it's an ebay special. I used to have my own electronic design/manufacturing business and used it to prototype enclosures. Yep, its for standard I/O shrouds. I made it from some 20mm thick HDPE I had lying around, and just cut the shape...

Another G5 Case Mod, with some useful resources

I used the existing drive bay power harness and just put a molex connector on it to connect to the (almost) standard power supply: I replaced the DVD drive with a SATA unit so that it would connect to my new gigabyte motherboard. I have installed OSX mountain lion..... WHAT A...

Another G5 Case Mod, with some useful resources

I have connected up the power button and led from the front panel. An important note to anyone trying my method, the apple power button/led combo pcb uses a common ground wire for both the led and switch. I am fortunate that my motherboard does the same, and indicates on the board which is...
