<< Solved >> Big Sur unable to boot

Look at this article. Seems like an known issue of Samsung drive going into read-only mode... I can't believe they didn't email people about this proactively when this firmware was released. I bought directly from Samsung.

I assume you are referring to the SSD (Samsung 980 M2 NVMe). I am not seeing mac based option for but will look around. BTW, I tried in windows with diskpart as well. No such luck :)

I tried Linux - multiple ones. Gparted, partition manager etc. Didn't try windows.

<< Solved >> Big Sur unable to boot

Tried formating. Can't do it. It is essentially a read only drive at this point. It is under warranty and Samsung said they will replace it if I send it. I am concerned about sending it as it has my personal data. Not sure how to erase a read only drive :)

<< Solved >> Big Sur unable to boot

Looks like whole disk mounts as read-only. So, not diskutil operation works on it. It probably mounts as read-only because of corrupt partition table is the guess.

<< Solved >> Big Sur unable to boot

Can't run first aid on disk partitions. Gives me permission denied error. Not sure if it's part of the problem. I was only able to do it at the top

<< Solved >> Big Sur unable to boot

BTW, i was wrong about Linux working on this... Linux is on another disk completely. @pastrychef I haven't tried restore yet. Isn't restore is for restoring another volume onto this partition? I was able to add a new ssd, install Big Sur, boot through that and look at data in the corrupted...

<< Solved >> Big Sur unable to boot

@pastrychef @Feartech I have 2 MacOS in boot menu and 1 Linux. Linux boots and both macos don't. Without USB boot nothing will work. Looks like same error both macos.

<< Solved >> Big Sur unable to boot

Thanks. Third image shows up if I boot without any external USB. I booted through USB in hopes of getting it working then try to pick the partition in opencore boot selector. It shows that I have all boot options before failure. I have 1 Linux and 2 Mac on it. None of them seem to work. I don't...

Less than 2 year old Samsung Nvme. Too bad! The area was a bit hot... Probably that killed it. I will try this. Thanks

<< Solved >> Big Sur unable to boot

I had my bigsur setup for last year plus without problem. Just recently it wouldn't boot. I use open efi. I did no changes and it suddenly wouldn't start. I am guessing my Samsung m2 got corrupted... if I boot with a USB stick then I can see the boot options and then I see a kernel panic. I have...

<< Solved >> Random crashes in Big Sur

@pastrychef I removed the heatsink and reinstalled with a new thermal paste (after cleaning). Now even with cinebench benchmarking for 12min the CPU didn't go above 70C. Normal usage shows around 35C. Photo processing with darktable shows around 50C. I think the problem is resolved now. Somehow...

@pastrychef thanks, is there way to check that short of installing a new one and compare?

<< Solved >> Random crashes in Big Sur

@pastrychef the temp is still hovering above 95C and sometimes 99C. It froze again :( I think it freezes if stays at 100C for a while is my guess. I have ordered a thermal paste. I will remount the CPU cooler again after cleaning. Not sure what else I should try.
