Thank you Casey for this phenomenal guide! I think I just found my Christmas/New Year gift to myself. The 4790k rig's doing OK for virtual music, but the rig is 6 years old and the early-days SSDs are really showing their age and bottleneck dumping sample libraries to DDR3 RAM.
I have a 980Ti Hybrid (the liquid/radiator one) and am very happy with the card in 10.13 and Windows 10 (for gaming). Looking for AMD suggestions so that I can go to Catalina. I'm OK with slightly lower performance if it's considerably more economical. Thanks!
If you do switch back, will you have to switch to another "main" set of programs? I toy with switching to Windows, but there's no Logic Pro for Windows. I do own Digital Performer and Ableton but the ergonomic setback is HUGE and I do it for fun/leisure not a living.
I think I'll invest in making my 4790K rig Catalina / Big Sur compatible, but not invest in a completely new i9+ setup. Cost will be: New GPU (currently have 980Ti), New 10x14 audio interface (mine's not Catalina supported), Paid upgrades/udpates for Waves, same for various NI & Arturia...
It can work with a 3000-series with some tinkering, but for simplicity I wouldn't recommend anything older than Haswell (4000). Note that modern Nvidia GPUs aren't supported at all in Catalina. iGPU will run the OS fine, an exact card would depend on your needs.
Clover attached - iMac 14,2 for Optiplex 9020 Haswell / HD4600 iGPU only
Edit: I initially thought this was Unibeast problem because the Clover worked previously and the latest Catalina update was the only thing that "changed."
Advice to anyone reading this: When you are "re-using" a USB stick...
I download the 8.23GB Install macOS Catalina file on an authentic Mac with SIP/CSR confirmed disabled. Unibeast completes w/o errors. On my build system, Clover boots but there's no installer option. I deleted the .IAPhysicalMedia file and have the HFSPlus drivers in the Clover folder. Disabling...
Thank you kindly for the reply.
Still in denial about the state of my 980Ti, which I use only occasionally for games when I boot into Windows (it still plays everything I play at max, so not looking to upgrade at this time).
Thank you for the nice guide. I also have a 9020MT i7-4790 (not K) like the one in your signature (the 4790k in my signature is a self-build, not Dell). But, I am planning to get an RX 570 to save $$$.
Do you think that the 570 setup will be similar to your 580? If I only need 1 screen and...
You may want to try: https://images.nvidia.com/mac/pkg/346/WebDriver-346.03.15f12.pkg It was proposed as an answer to me after I already moved to Sierra instead over this issue. I've specifically been holding off on the last security update for my other El Cap machine - have not had time to try...
I also have this case for my 4790K build and LOVE it! I'm not a "builder-builder," but everything turned out so clean because the mess hides so well on the other side. And the 2.5"/SSD caddy is to die for! Beautiful build and guide! ^_^
Hi Everyone - I see a lot of talk about the svelte, compact, thin notebooks on the market. That's not what I'm interested in. I'm looking to replace my Retina 2012 MBP, which is showing system board symptoms (even after fan replacements) and is not long for this world.
I'd like something with a...
