Thanks dudenesspa! When you have time to write up a bit more details we'd love to hear about it! I'd be interested to know if it's displaying 4K or 5K. Does the high depth color work? What about the USB hub, webcam, and speakers? Thanks so much!
Thanks for the extra info ffffwh! It's promising news but we obviously need more evidence and documentation to work out all the details. The display is on sale for under $1K for a few more months so hopefully people will get to tinker with it more and get thing like Hackintosh support working.
FWIW, my understanding is that the new MacBook Pros send 2 display streams (each at half 5K res) and the LG display syncs them up for display in 5K.
But you can just send a 4K stream too apparently:

Thanks for all the responses.
Would love to see some tests of the 4K and 5K LG displays once they ship out. I'm patient enough to wait for new hardware to drive them. Hope we can get everything working in the long run.
I'm interested in building a Hackintosh to support the new LG UltraFine 5K display. It's on the November Buyers Guide too.
It uses Thunderbolt 3 over a USB C style connection to drive the display over 1 cable along with a USB C Hub, speakers, and a web camera.
