Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming build with working NVRAM

That appears to have worked. I'll keep using it and see if it is only a temporary fix or not. What is it about creating a new User and logging in that would change anything?

I have not...is Black Magic useful for that, or is there a better utility to check drive health? Edit: I have a second nVME SSD that I just tried to access via Finder and it took some 20 seconds to populate. And I see there is a health check utility built in to MacOS. Will run that first. The...

Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming build with working NVRAM

So just in the last month, I've been experiencing some pretty radical performance issues in Monterey wherein: I open a program using Command + Space and typing anything causes the spinner to go for 10-15 seconds (or more) before any autofill suggestions appear. Or it notifies me that there are...

Agreed. 16GB is bare minimum these days. The larger SoC footprint means more RAM, more bandwidth, more I/O. The M1 was a valiant first offering, but you knew the subsequent generation was going to make certain leaps.

Agreed. I was sad to see the limited bandwidth of the M1 resulted in only a few I/O ports. I'm definitely keeping my eyes on the rumored Mac Mini refresh early next year in the hopes they do it right same as the new MBPs. I tried plugging in her old 5th gen iPad as well and it never showed...

Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming build with working NVRAM

@pastrychef: I bought my wife a shiny new iPad for Christmas and I went to plug it into my Hackintosh via the Type C port (since the new iPads are bundled with Lightning-to-type-c cables) and while it passes power it does not appear to be useful for data transfer. I had it working prior to my...

So after copying the EFI folder from the USB to the main install drive, Clover will not generate a serial number. I click into the Serial Number input field and click Generate New but nothing happens. I can generate an SmUUID by clicking Generate New. Never mind...found the dropdown menu I'm...

...ohhh. I did not regenerate my system info, rather I duplicated it from the instance of Big Sur before the clean install. Let me regenerate all that info, and then hopefully I'll be able to delete what is my current (broken) device listing. Thanks!

The annoying thing now is that Messages is borked again in that I can't communicate with any other Apple devices (except my wife's iPhone). Either the contact shows red, or any attempted message fails. The other weird thing is that, under System Preferences > AppleID the computer is listed as...

I had two sets of those: one was Catalina / Catalina - Data and the other was Samsung 970 EVO SSD / Samsung 970 EVO SSD - Data. It was odd, but I'm guessing it's a residual effect of my aborted attempt to update to Big Sur months ago and then reverting back to Catalina using CCC.

I may have answered my own question. Thankfully I still have access to an MBP and I simply overwrote the EFI directory with your most recent Clover EFI zip and it appears to be installing Big Sur. Here's hoping she works!

Whelp, I may have bit off more than I can chew thinking it'd be an easy fix. I successfully updated from Catalina to Big Sur and this time I did not have any issues with AppleID and Messages. I did, however, have a problem with space as it seems Big Sur was installed as a separate partition...

No, I used the backed-up installation of Catalina for recovery.

Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming build with working NVRAM

So I want to just roll it all back to Catalina, but executing a restore from a CCC backup from the backup drive onto the 970 EVO resulted in a copy of my Catalina backup existing along side the newly-upgraded Big Sur installation. What is the best way to wipe the 970 EVO and restore my CCC...

Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming build with working NVRAM

Yeah, it's odd. I had a buddy message me from his iPhone, and while I got the message I still could not reply. There are no other devices associated with my Apple ID; I've logged out and back in multiple times via Messages preferences (sometimes the chats go green, sometimes they are blue as a...
