I finally figured out. I literally tried everything. Using the bless command, using the "systemsetup -setstartupdisk" command, making sure the NVME was selected as a startup disk in System Preferences.

I realize this thread is for hacks, but I'm wondering if there is anything AT ALL relevant to Macbook Pros. I started a thread here -> https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/mid-2014-macbook-pro-nvme-is-booting-but.278286/
Or do I just live with the slow boot to the Apple logo?
.....it boots slow to the Apple logo (15 seconds). Once it gets to the Apple logo, it makes it to the login screen in another 10 seconds, for a total of 25 seconds. I have the NVMe installed internally using an adapter. If I use the Apple Startup Manager, the NVMe shows up as an external drive...
I went the same direction as you, but with a different adapter and a Crucial P1 1TB NVME. One thing I learned was that I had to run the security update in the apple store to get my BootROM changed. I'm on HighSierra. I had version 112.XXXX.XXX and after the update it changed to 115.XXXX.XXX. I...
UPDATE: I'm on El Capitan. I had issues with the App Store Initially, made a few changes, and all is good there. I still need to verify Ethernet (i217V) and ALC1150 are working.

UPDATE: I used this link (and went to STEP 4 - Post Install) to install Clover over (on top of) my existing mavericks install. Works great. Next step is to update to El Cap.

I have successfully booted an existing Mavericks/Chimera install using a Clover Test USB. See here- http://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/move-from-mavericks-multibeast-to-el-capitan-advice.194221/
I'm sort of stuck on what I need to do next. I'm thinking ideally it would be easiest to update to El...
UPDATE: I used nv_disable=1 and got in to the existing Mavericks install using the Clover test usb, but the screen is shrunk down like it normally is during a chimera boot. The difference is, the chimera boot expands the screen (or makes it the correct size) once I get to the login screen. With...
