    CD/DVD/Blu-Ray/UHD Blu-Ray - LG WH14NS or Other - Troubleshooting/Advice

I think I followed the guide that is here. The MakeMKV discussion boards have lots of info on this. I think I used the Windows application to flash the firmware, and it actually worked doing that from a Parallels Windows VM on my Mac laptop, plugging the drive in with a SATA to USB adapter, then...

    CD/DVD/Blu-Ray/UHD Blu-Ray - LG WH14NS or Other - Troubleshooting/Advice

I picked up a LG WH16NS60 and it works fine in my Hackintosh. Easy to downgrade the (locked) firmware and rips UHD Blu-Rays (and so presumably predecessor formats) with no fuss.

    CD/DVD/Blu-Ray/UHD Blu-Ray - LG WH14NS or Other - Troubleshooting/Advice

Finally got around to trying to use the above referenced disc drive in my Hackintosh and can't make it work. It shows up as a SATA device in System Information and MakeMKV can see it, but when I put a disc in (tried both CD and DVD) the disc spins for awhile and the drive spits it back out. That...

NVMe - Samsung vs Sabrent Rocket 4 or WD SN850?

I think a Gen4 NVMe will work in a Gen3 PCIe slot. Or if they are much cheaper than the Gen4s, Sabrent Rocket vs WD Black SN750 NVMe. I am solving for a problem with Samsung NVMe here, not trying to get Gen4 over Gen3 PCIe.

NVMe - Samsung vs Sabrent Rocket 4 or WD SN850?

Samsung 970 Pro in my current desktop build runs quite a bit hotter than other components, idles around 50 degC. Just saw this post pointing out that Samsung NVMe controllers do not play nice with macOS, and the linked Dortania post suggests Sabrent Rocket and WD NVMes are a better choice for...

    Gigabyte Z390 Designare, i7-9700K, 64GB, Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB

After one aborted attempt at upgrading from Mojave to Catalina almost a year ago I decided to give it another go. After updating my EFI following @CaseySJ's guide I was unable to boot into my Mojave installation. @CaseySJ suggested I give OpenCore a try, and that did the trick. Steps I followed...

    [SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Thought about that, but Casey already included that in his install files.

    [SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Yeah no drama with OpenCore for me. Thanks for pushing me forward on that. I do have a fair number of apps installed, so not using Migration Assistant would be somewhat painful. I will try the in-place upgrade as you suggest, maybe on a scratch SSD first, then if that is OK I can do it on my...

    [SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Yeah no obvious problem booting into my Mojave installation with OpenCore 0.6.3, following your guide. I didn't need to reset NVRAM. But still wondering about upgrade vs clean install/migrate choice.

    [SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

I never copied the EFI over to my Mojave SSD, that would have been after updating to Catalina. My Mojave install is still in good shape, if the kexts that were deleted did anything I haven't noticed (Ethernet is fine, and for audio I just just use digital speakers). Turns out I guess I botched...

    [SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Mojave install is still intact/fine, less kexts deleted from /Library/Extensions per the Update Micro-Guide, plus have a backup before those deletions (and checked to make sure that was OK, EFI and OSX). Can't update to Catalina via System Preferences (can only go to Big Sur there), but I...

    [SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

I followed your 1, updated from F8 to F9i and made required changes to the BIOS. I followed 2, made changes to config files with BBEdit, and booting into the new EFI machine had changed from 19,1 to 18,1 with a new serial number. I was just using Clover Configurator to look at things, your...

    [SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Was going to try to upgrade from Mohave to Catalina, but couple of little bumps and then a brick wall. Followed @CaseySJ's Micro-Guide for Updgrading from Mojave to Catalina 10.15.4 and Newer. No problem setting up and booting to a new EFI on a USB drive, copying and pasting RtVariables and...

On the main build post maybe add NVMeFix to the list of kexts to add (if you have a NVMe SSD)? Saw you were suggesting this in your Z490 Golden Build so I added it, and it dropped the temperature of my Samsung Pro NVMe by about 10 degC.

    Gigabyte Z390 Designare, i7-9700K, 64GB, Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB

I noticed that @CaseySJ is recommending the use of NVMeFix in his Z490 Golden Build, that fix mentions better power management for non-Apple NVMe SSDs, so I thought I would give that a whirl. NVMeFix requires Lilu >=1.4.1, so I had to update that, and while I was at it also updated AppleALC and...
