Well it seems tat perseverance has paid off. I finally have SL with the 10.6.8 update installed! It required the network to be left connected and the date to be set back to August 2011. I have made a backup of the current setup. The next step will be to get Yosemite on it.

This does not seem to make sense, since both usually work from the same output which is switched when you plug in the headphone jack. The only difference is that the headphone output will be attenuated. Are you sure its not a problem with the jack?
