I use iStatMenu to have the fans and CPU speed etc shown. I know it isn't cheap but looking great and does also work with VirtualSMC and SuperIO kext.

it won't help you to bypass the 15 port limit. You should really create an USBmap.kext like it is stated on the Dortania guide. That will also solve your disconnect issues.
