I did already try running a brand new installation on the SSD after cloning my main one to another SSD, and got the same thing, but I haven't tried taking out my 16GB of RAM. Thanks for the advice.

As for the Desktop issue, I think the closest you'll be able to get to that is some kind of automated script that cleans up your desktop files on a daily or weekly basis by moving them to another (off-SSD)...
So essentially you just want to load your Hackintosh drive as any other hard drive on your main Mac?
If you don't mind the connection being slower than FireWire 800, why not buy a cheap USB SATA disk caddy and put your Hackintosh drive in that? You can get the caddies for a very low price. I...
