Update went well. I copied the latest apfs.efi to the usual location. Used the App Store update, and finally Benjamin Dobell's script for Nvidia web driver. Easy peasy.

Yes, this did the trick. Thank you very much! I removed both FakePCIID_XHCIMux and FakePCIID.kext and followed the instructions to "Raise Port Limit Patch for USB 3", and it works beautifully.

I tried most of the suggestions given out here, and the only reliable source of audio is still the front panel headphone jack. I threw in the towel and just connected my creative speakers to the headphone jack! It's not ideal but it works.
